Role of Diet

The diet plays a critical role in the prevention and management of hypertension.

Sodium, potassium, and alcohol intake all affect the progression of hypertension in different ways.
The Mediterranean Diet equally reduces the occurrence of the condition. Diet is thus key to the management of hypertension (Ozemek et al. 2018).

Etiology, Progression and Treatment

The first aspect is the etiology, progression, and treatment of hypertension.

Under the etiology, hypertension is broadly categorized into essential and non-essential hypertension.
Non-essential hypertension is caused by a range of factors that include increased sodium intake and increased alcohol intake (Nerenberg et. al 2018).

In most cases, hypertension progresses through three distinct stages.

The first stage is the pre-hypertension, followed by early hypertension and then established hypertension.
Each of these stages is characterized by specific elements that lead to the overall increase in both the systolic and diastolic pressures (Ozemek et al. 2018).

The treatment options for hypertension are broadly categorized into:

pharmacological and
non-pharmacological approaches.
For the pharmacological approaches, different classes of medications are utilized which include the use of beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers among other medications (Ozemek et al. 2018). The non-pharmacological approaches include dietary interventions.

The recommended diet in the management of hypertension includes:

the implementation of the Mediterranean Diet,

 

low sodium intake higher potassium intake, and the reduction in alcohol consumption (Nerenberg et. al 2018). These approaches reduce the occurrence and progression of hypertension.

Nurse intervention, assessment, and client education play a critical role in the management of hypertension.

The key nursing interventions in the management of hypertension is encouraging the patient to adopt positive dietary habits and consult with the dietary experts (Ozemek et al. 2018).
The nurse assessment include assessment of the blood pressure and adherence with the laid down recommendations.
