Logic Model III Assignment Guidance Short Term Impacts: Theory-Based Behavioral and Environmental Determinants This week’s addition to the logic model is perhaps one of the most important. This week, you will identify the determinants of the behaviors and/or environmental conditions that you added to your model last week. The selection of determinants is critical: • The determinants will guide the actual strategies that you ultimately include in the program, so selecting the determinants guides everything else you will do. • In public health we change determinants as a theoretical process for ultimately changing behavior and health outcomes. Therefore, selecting the appropriate determinants represents your best effort at using public health evidence to design the most effective program. In this week’s assignment, you will conduct a literature review to identify the determinants of the behaviors and/or environmental conditions that you included in your most recent logic model. We are now working on the logic model section highlighted below: Short Term Intermediate Long Term Long Term Logic Model V Assignment Logic Model III Assignment Logic Model II Assignment Administrative and Policy Conditions Program Inputs Program Outputs Policies Process Evaluation Impact Evaluation Logic Model IV Assignment Logic Model I Assignment Program Participants Program Strategies Inputs Partnerships Organizational Capacity Environmental Conditions Health Status Quality of Life Impacts Outcomes Outcome Evaluation Determinants Human Behaviors This assignment has the following requirements:
A. Conduct a literature review to identify, based on evidence, the determinants that are highly influential on your behaviors and/or environmental conditions. Search the literature based on your behavior to identify determinants. When selecting determinants, be sure to consider these requirements: • You must identify at least TWO determinants for each behavior or each environmental condition in your logic model. Therefore, you will identify at least FOUR determinants overall. You can have more determinants for each if you choose. • The determinants must be based on theoretical constructs and from models or theories that are well supported in the literature. For example, you should be using theories and models such as: Health belief model Theory of reasoned action Theory of planned behavior Transtheoretical model (must be constructs not stages) Social support Stress and coping You can use other theories or models as appropriate. • You can use a single theory (all four determinants come from the constructs of a single theory/model. Or you may select from different theories and models to identify the constructs. You must identify, and cite, a minimum of TWO sources for each determinant you select. Criteria for Selecting Determinants: • They are based on a known theoretical construct. • They are clearly among those for which there is evidence for a known relationship to the behavior or environmental condition (or similar behaviors and environmental conditions). • Each can be changed through an intervention strategy. • You can identify examples of how they would be measured (for example on a prepost survey during a program).
B. Add the Determinants to Your Logic Model Here is an example of the instructor’s logic model. You will add your determinants to your logic model, being sure to improve the other sections based on feedback you have already received on previous versions. Once you have created your logic model, it should look like this below, and should be included on page ONE of the assignment you will submit. The determinants added in this example are highlighted.
C. Prepare Your Narrative. This section should be formatted as follows: 1. List each behavior or environmental condition as a SUBHEADING. 2. Under each behavior or environmental condition, list the determinants you have selected for each. Make these a subheading. 3. Provide a paragraph for each determinant. In your paragraph for each determinant, you should: • Summarize the literature that provides evidence that the determinant is an appropriate selection. • Your summary of the evidence should clearly state how this determinant is an appropriate choice based upon the criteria for determinant selection earlier in this document. • Use correct in-text citations. • Remember that you must include at least two sources for each determinant.
D. Develop Measurable Short Term Impact Objectives for Each Determinant. 1. Label this section “Measurable Short Term Impact Objectives” in your Narrative 2. List each determinant from the section above. 3. For each determinant, write at least one measurable objective that indicates the level of change you will expect to see from participants after completing your program. 4. Describe how you will assess whether this objective has been achieved. Example (use this format for each of the determinants you have identified): Measurable Short Term Impact Objectives Perceived Barriers: After completing the program, at least 75% of participants will be able to identify at least one clinic in their zip code that offers free HIV screening for those without insurance. Assessing Objective: Participants will complete a brief survey during the final session of the program. One of the questions on the survey will ask them to identify at least one.E. Provide a reference page that includes correct citations for all evidence you have used in previous sections. My health issue I am working on is Substance abuse. Human behavior I also choose was Sleeping and Eating habit and Soliciting for money
