DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES
ONLY USE PROVIDED PDF TO ANALYZE THE TEXT, DON’T JUST REPEAT WHAT IT SAYS.

A summary presents the main and supporting ideas of a text in a way that reduces these statements down to just the bare minimum. Summaries do not focus on the individual details of a text, but instead the overall, broader idea being described within a text. An analysis is when you take a text apart, look it over, and see how it works. Does the author prove their main point in a believable way, using facts and evidence, or is it mostly just opinion-based and not very credible? How well does the author use evidence to back up their claims? Is the author biased towards one side of the topic over the other? Does the author give us the entire picture to truly understand the issue? These are just some of the things to think about when analyzing a text.

A good outline to follow when writing a summary & analysis essay is as follows:

1. Introduction (Paragraph 1)
a. Background Information
i. Briefly introduce the article and author by name and describe what the article is about.
ii. Describe what the author’s argument or claim is.
iii. Describe how the author supports their claim, aka, what are their main points.
b. Thesis
i. Give an overall analysis on how successfully the author validates and proves their claims in one, concise sentence.
2. Body (Paragraph 2)
a. Focus on 1 valid area of analysis for the article, for example, how credible the evidence was that the author used.
b. Be as specific and detailed as possible when discussing how the element you chose affects the overall tone and outcome of the main point and meaning of the article.
3. Body (Paragraph 3)
a. Focus on a second valid area of analysis for the article, for example, how biased the author is towards the topic.
b. Be as specific and detailed as possible when discussing how the element you chose affects the overall tone and outcome of the main point and meaning of the article.
4. Conclusion (Paragraph 3)
a. Brief Summary
i. Re-state the author’s main argument or claim.
ii. Re-state your overall analysis and thesis.
iii. Re-state your two main points of analysis.
b. Finish up with a final thought or statement that attempts to bring the whole paper together into one final conclusion.

For this essay, you will choose an article from a list provided on our HFC Online site. YOU CAN NOT CHOOSE YOUR OWN ARTICLE. YOU MUST PICK ONE FROM THE LIST PROVIDED ON OUR MOODLE SITE. You are required to read the text carefully and summarize and analyze it’s information, interpret its message, explain its techniques, or explain its social context, following the guidelines discussed in the Little Seagull Handbook and in our virtual class discussions. You are not required to focus on all of these aspects! Choose one or two of them that either interest you the most or stand out to you the most and focus on those. You are not required to include any outside sources for this essay, as it is based solely on the information and writing techniques contained in the article alone.

This essay must be a minimum of 3-double spaced, typed pages, in proper MLA format, but no more than 5-double spaced, typed pages. Only MS Word or PDF files will be accepted. Documents created in any other type of format are not compatible with Moodle or my computer and cannot be accessed.

The focus of this essay should be the summary and academic analysis, not your opinion or the reader. Words such as “I” or “me” or “my” or “myself” “you” or “your” or “we” or “us” or “our” or “ourselves” should not be used. The article and analysis should speak for themselves without specifically referencing your personal opinion or what the readers should think or do.
