Definition Exercise One
-Due Feb 20 before 11:59 pm
-Three to Four Paragraphs
-APA formatted source citation
-Reading Source: Frederick O’Hara, A Brief History of Technical Communication
Writing Task: You will write a 3 to 4 paragraph definition of one of the terms below, adding the historical context of the term from Frederick O’Hara’s essay. You must do some paraphrasing and work in the details from O’Hara’s essay into your definition – do not just copy and paste them in. In using O’Hara’s historical reference, you must introduce O’Hara as the source, and use quotation marks if you use any of his words. You will also be doing some paraphrasing. As a balance, try to quote from O’Hara no more than twice and paraphrase for the rest of the references. The last page of the PDF document has his background information. For example, to introduce him, you might say something like:
According to technical communication expert, Frederick O’Hara, Ph.D., “[QUOTE HERE]” After that introduction, you can just refer to him as O’Hara.
Use APA in-text citations for this exercise.
Choose one of the following terms to define in three to four paragraphs
· What is the scientific method?
· What is an algorithm?
Your audience: A high school senior who is interested in majoring in Engineering in college.
Your Source: Frederick O’Hara, 2002, A Brief History of Technical Communication, Journal of The Society for Technical Communication, Vol. 14, No.2, pp. 1-5
