As we learned this week, an interview protocol serves as more than a simple list of questions to ask; it is the product of time spent considering how best to foster rapport with participants, how to elicit the sorts of data you seek, how to keep people talking, and how to leave space for others to reflect out loud. For this week’s assignment, please submit a complete draft of the protocol for the interview for your mini qualitative study assignment. You’ll conduct the interview itself over the next two weeks, but for now, just submit the plans you have made for the scope and direction of that conversation. Recall that an interview protocol is most likely to be successful when it includes the following elements:
A planned introduction, wherein you explain the purpose and scope of the interview and study to each participant, talk through the structure of the interview, and the introduce the general sorts of topics they can expect.
Clear, direct, unambiguous questions which only ask one thing at a time.
Thoughtful sequencing of questions, and plans to fully cover a topic before moving on. (i.e., no bouncing back and forth among topic areas.)
Multiple different questions on a larger topic so as to gain insight from several angles.
Mostly (if not exclusively) open-ended questions that are complex enough to generate substantive responses.
Opportunities for participants to pause and reflect.
Techniques to put participants at ease, especially in the introduction
Some pre-planned potential follow-up questions. For example, you can likely anticipate some of what your participants will say on your topic. Therefore, you can also likely anticipate the sorts of things you might want to follow up on, and the questions you might use to do so.
Humility and appreciation – you are not the expert on your topic; your participants are. This is your opportunity to leverage their expertise.
To that end, good interview protocols always end with some form of the following question: “What haven’t I asked that you think I should know?” Then, you ask about that in subsequent interviews!
Taking into account the points above and our readings and other learning activities this week, your assignment should include enough questions to generate a 45-minute interview discussion. Depending on how open-ended they are, and how well you put the participants at ease, you therefore want somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 questions or discussion prompts at a minimum, knowing that you may not ask each person all questions.…
