Reflective writing about :
Reliability deals with the ability of a measurement to give consistent results when measuring a construct in different persons, in different situations, and at different times (Oliveria & Oliveira, 2013). If an instrument is reliable, it indicates that it is free from error (Oliveria & Oliveira, 2013). The analysis that is done on reliability is called reliability analysis (Statistics Solutions, 2021). Reliability analysis is figured out by obtaining the proportion of systematic variation on a scale (Statistics Solutions, 2021). Therefore, if the association in reliability analysis is high, the scale will show consistent results, making it reliable. Reliability can be measured with the test-retest method, alternative form method, internal consistency method, the split-halves method, and inter-rater reliability (Statistics Solutions, 2021).
Validity is the property of an instrument of measuring what it is intended to measure (Oliveria & Oliveira, 2013).
Validity refers to the state in which the researcher can guarantee that the implications drawn from the data are without error (Statistics Solutions, 2021). In research, validity is evaluated by content validity, construct validity, and criterion-related validity (Statistics Solutions, 2021).
I believe that a biostatistician would look at both reliability and validity as two very important factors in measuring information. There can be an instrument that is reliable, but not valid. The opposite can be true as well in that there can be validity and no reliability. However, it is less common to have validity and no reliability (Middleton, 2020). Based on this concept, reliability could very well be more important for biostatisticians.
