1. Read Ch. 4, 5 and 6 in your textbook.
2. For each of these three chapters, you will create an assignment with two parts: (a) a list of the five most important or interesting things you learned from the chapter and (b) a response paragraph (of between 350 and 450 words) in which you will analyze the chapter. Your list and your paragraph should be on the same sheet of paper. All three assignments (one per chapter) are due in their appropriate drop box (found under Assessments: Assignments) by June 7th at midnight.
THE LIST: Make a list of the top five most important things that you felt you learned from the chapter. (Yes, I really want you to write it as a list #1…., #2…, #3…, etc.) If you had to tell someone five key pieces of information from the chapter, what would they be? What knowledge do you feel was the most crucial, most surprising, most intriguing, etc.? Don’t simply list a term or a statistic. Be sure to write in full sentences. Three to four sentences (for each list item) should be sufficient for you to (a) state what information you found significant and (b) explain why you chose that piece of information and believe that it is significant/meaningful.
THE RESPONSE PARAGRAPH: Your response paragraph should be a combination of personal reflection and critical analysis of the material presented. These mini-essays will help you read the chapters in an active and critical manner, and should illustrate to me that you have thoroughly read the chapter and thought about the material presented. Do not just address one part of the chapter. Do not simply summarize the chapter. Do not merely write an emotional reaction to the chapter. Analyze the scientific knowledge you are presented with. Take the material to the next level. How does it connect to your life? How does it connect to other societal issues that you are experiencing or learning about? Consider what you learned in the chapter and how that works within your current knowledge base. Was it new? Did it remind you of something you learned in another course? Did it support or oppose your current belief system? Remember that the author is discussing complex matters within short chapters. Why did she choose to present the issues that she did? Are they relevant to your life? If not, why did she address those issues? Be thoughtful.
Each response paragraph should be between 350 and 450 words, and you will need to include a word count on your essay. Please note that Microsoft Word gives you the word count for your document (in the lower left-hand corner of your screen or by choosing the Review Tab and then the Word Count option).
Each assignment must contain the following information at the top of the page: Student Name, Chapter Number, Word Count
