Chapter Review

The purpose of this assignment is to ensure that you have a good understanding of some of the basic concepts in chapters 6 & 7. Cultural groups have a several ways to determine who is related to them as well as who can be part of a particular social group. Detailed responses to the questions below will demonstrate your full understanding of these various concepts. I expect about 1-2 pages (200-300 words) per question. You should do some outside research on these topics and use that research to enhance your response to the questions. Be sure to cite all your outside sources, both in-text and in a Works Cited section at the end of the paper. Do not rely heavily on quotations. I am looking for you to demonstrate that YOU have a good understanding of these concepts.

Assignment Topics

Thinking back to the Tlingit Kinship video, they practiced matrilineal kinship, a form of unilineal descent.
Provide a detailed explanation of the various aspects of life that were controlled by kinship in that culture.
First, explain what anthropology means when claiming that “race is a cultural construction”.
Second, discuss one example of racial stratification in contemporary U.S. society, including the consequences of that stratification.
Social media has a large influence on social groups.
Illustrate how you see social media impacting social groups in contemporary society by discussing one positive impact and one negative impact.
