HUM 202 ESSAY #3: Topic and Guidelines
To write your essay, DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES
Topic: Satire is used to bring attention (in an absurd way) to a social issue. Ultimately, satire is used to bring about social change.
Choose a modern comedian or TV show that uses satire and make connections between the kind of satire used in Hogarth’s Marriage a la Mode paintings, Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, Book IV, and/or Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro opera.
• Be sure to compare the kinds of social changes the satirists wanted in the 18th century to the social changes satirists want today.
• To support your thesis, use at least two specific examples from the 18th century works as well as from your chosen television show or comedian.
Sample Outline:
Introduction with thesis
Body Paragraph One: Hogarth’s Marriage a la Mode
Body Paragraph Two: Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, Book IV or Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro
Body Paragraph Three: Modern-day show, like Modern Family or Parks and Recreation

Essay: In terms of length, your essay should be 500-750 words long. Support your thesis with specific examples taken from the C&V textbook, the assigned readings, and the notes/information posted on Blackboard. Unsupported answers will receive little or no credit, and vague answers will be graded down. To support your answers, you may use your Culture and Values textbook as well as the materials posted in the Module 5 (Chapter 16) under “Content.” DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES.
Organization: Follow standard essay format: begin with an Introduction, which will include your clearly stated thesis; support your thesis in well-developed body paragraphs. Conclude your essay with a well-developed conclusion.
Citation Form: Use in-text parenthetical citations in MLA format to identify ideas, which you have either paraphrased (put in your own words) or quoted from another source, such as your textbook and/or the materials posted on Bb. Be sure to provide a Works Cited page, which includes a full citation in MLA format for each of the sources you cite in your essay.
Quote sparingly and always introduce quotations and explain them. Document ALL quotations and paraphrases using in-text, parenthetical citations in MLA format, and include a Works Cited page.
Writing Style, Grammar, and Punctuation: Write your essay in third person. Avoid using person pronouns, like “I” or “we.” You also should use standard English to write your essay. Avoid errors in grammar and punctuation. Proofread your essay carefully before submitting your final draft. If you have a problem with writing, please seek help from a tutor at ARC or Student Support Services.
Using Turnitin: You may submit and re-submit your essay as many times as necessary UNTIL THE DEADLINE to catch accidental plagiarism. Plagiarism shows up under “Matching” in Turnitin. You should not have more than 15% matching unless the matching occurs in your in-text citations and/or on your Works Cited page. Be sure that you do not plagiarize your sources, including your textbook!
Plagiarism means copying three or more consecutive words from any source without giving the proper credit to the source from which you got the ideas. “Proper credit” means identifying the source both in the text of the essay with an in-text, parenthetical citation in MLA format at the end of all sentences which contain PARAPHRASED or quoted ideas from a source. If you have questions about plagiarism, you should take your essay to a tutor in Student Support Services (if you qualify) or to the ARC for help.
To write your essay, DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES OTHER THAN YOUR C&V TEXTBOOK AND THOSE PROVIDED ON BLACKBOARD in Module 5 for Chapter 16 posted under “Content.” This means that you should not use information from the Internet to write your essay, like “Answers: Yahoo” and other non-credible sources.
