Rhetorical Essay Assignment:

For your essay, you will need to conduct a rhetorical analysis of a current speech (2017 or earlier) or an article of writing which takes a position on an issue that is from your major (if declared) or a major/program you are actively seeking.
For example, if you are a business major interested in the growth of the Red River Gorge, you might want to look for an article in which the author takes a position on the issue of the development of a major resort there.
Within this paper, you must examine the entire rhetorical situation, briefly summarize the issue, and identify the position of the author. Determine if the evidence is effective in this work, is it artistic or intrinsic and how is it helping the argument? What are the appeals used to support the work, and what fallacies harm it? Next, you want to explain and evaluate the effectiveness of this argument. If this argument falls short of their purpose or fails to attract their audience, how could this author amend their work?
The essay must be 3-5 full pages, typed, double spaced, Times New Roman and in MLA format. See the syllabus section on paper format for more information before you email me with questions. This will be written in a standard 5 paragraph format.
You cannot write about the following: LGBTQ issues, Drug or alcohol issues, politics or religious issues, abortion issues, Vaccines, The Affordable HealthCare Act, Violence in games, school shootings, gun control, or on a speech from MLK or a prior or current president. Remember, it must be directly related to your major or one you are interested in if you have not declared one. If you find a general topic or idea, it must be narrowed down.
You can use sources such as websites (only .GOV, .EDU or .ORG will be acceptable); scholarly articles or regular articles, TED talks. Make sure to have a full citation of your work. You will need to have at least one source for this assignment.
