Caring for the Nguyens
Review the opening scenario of Nam Nguyen at the front of this book. As the clinic nurse, you have written the following nursing diagnostic statement: Overweight r/t inappropriate food choices and serving size as evidenced by body mass index (BMI) of 28.5.
Write at least two short-term and two long-term goals for Mr. Nguyen based on this diagnostic statement. Remember that your goals must be realistic and take into account Mr. Nguyen’s other health problems.
Please use the rubric when writing the paper, my professor is very practical about that.

ANSWER
Caring for the Nguyens
The diagnostic statement indicates overweight and inappropriate food choices and serving size, which has increased body weight. Concerning the diagnostic statement, the interventions for Mr. Nguyen’s health problems should correspond to the amount of food, eating habits, and food choices, which will positively impact his health. The general goal for Mr. Nguyen will be weight management to foster a healthy lifestyle. Considerably well-planned goals can facilitate converting thoughts into action (Dailey et al., 2016). For instance, well planned and realistic weight loss goals transition to a better and healthier lifestyle. Overly aggressive and unrealistic weight loss goals undermine the efforts of reduced weight. Therefore, creating goals that will lower weight and improve the overall health to achieve the desired outcome.
The short term goals are to lose 1 to 2 lb per week and five to ten percent decrease in body weight from baseline in the first six months. Regarding the initial body weight, 5 to 10 percent of body weight is a reasonable rate of loss for overweight. With a well-designed program, Mr. Nguyen can achieve weight loss and improve health significantly. Considerably, if the short term goals are achieved, further weight loss for the patient can be attempted. For instance, six months of weight loss therapy is a reasonable timeline for 5-10 percent bodyweight reduction. Some strategies for weight maintenance and loss could be physical activity, dietary therapy, pharmacotherapy, and behavior therapy (Fruh, 2017).
The long term goals for Mr. Nguyen are: to prevent further weight gain, maintain lower body weight and long term weight maintenance (Dailey et al., 2016). Considerably, nutritional plans, proper food choice, and weight loss therapy can reduce the severity of Mr. Nguyen’s obesity/overweight associated risk factors. The long terms goals will set a stage for initial weight loss. Mr. Nguyen’s weight loss therapy is realistic and can be maintained and achieved over time.
