This assignment relates to the following Course Learning Requirements:
Objective of this Assignment: To assess which ethical guidelines may be violated in the scenario using the 7 step Model for Ethical Decision making and outline potential solutions
Read the following scenario and respond using the 7 Step Model of Ethical Decision Making.
John is an 8-year-old boy with autism that attends 123 Learning Group under the supervision of Liz. He has some functional communication via the use of PECS. He really likes to eat sweets and chocolate but has a poor diet otherwise and is overweight. He loves Barney videos and music and is motivated to perform many tasks to earn free time to watch these. His parents feel that it is not age appropriate to watch these and as a result have banned these from home and have told his teachers that they are not allowed to use these videos as reinforcers at school. As a result, whenever he sees these when he is out or when another student is watching them he engages in problem behaviour to access these items. John has some health concerns including a history with constipation and skin problems that cause painful dry, itchy and sometimes bleeding skin. When these health issues arise John becomes more agitated and aggressive then typical. Efforts to reduce this problem behaviour have been unsuccessful.

ANSWER
7 Step Ethical Decision Making Model – Bailey |
Step 1: Is this covered by the guidelines?
1. The parents violate the guideline of safeguarding John’s (child) rights and welfare seen through poor diet. 2. Restricting John from watching Barney videos and songs, which is what other children of his age are watching. 3. The parents violate the guideline to promote mental and physical health, as a solution to John’s aggressive behavior remains unfounded. 4. The parents violate their responsibility and guideline to determine the best interest of their child John. |
Step 2: What are the Risks Involved?
1. Health risks including poor diet, overweight and eating of sweets and chocolates unsupervised by parents 2. Psychological risks seen through the agitated and aggressive behavior in John 3. Violent behavior is a risk factor for juvenile arrest 4. John’s violent and aggressive behavior is a risk factor for causing harm to other children |
Step 3: Who are the players Involved?
1. John 2. John’s parents 3. Liz, his supervisor 4. Other students |
Step 4: What is the Ethics Contingency Plan?
1. Working with John and his parents concerning his health issue, as it forms the primary factor for his development. Including explaining the benefits of a balanced diet and healthy nutrition. 2. Advise and design healthy nutrition and balanced diet regimens, explaining the role of physical activities as well as the importance of dietary, behavioral, and lifestyle changes in John for effective weight loss management. 3. Comprehensive diagnosis including testing, blood samples, and other necessary tests will be carried out to determine John’s health concerns of constipation and skin problems. 4. Educating and advising John’s parents on the pros and cons of Barney videos, show that other children are watching, and these videos are John’s primary interest. If the parents still feel the videos are age-inappropriate, alternatives similar to John’s interests and age-appropriate videos will be identified, thus developing a win-win situation. This will help minimize the instigators of aggressive and agitated behavior in John. |
Step 5: The Skills and Clout needed?
1. Human relation skills such as communication and interpersonal skills 2. Conceptual skills such as analytical, decision-making, and creative skills 3. Exceptional ethics and moral fortitude |
Step 6: The Implementation Plan?
The IP will follow the following sequence 1. Counselling, educating, and advising John and his parents on the identified issues 2. Designing healthy nutrition and dietary regimens for John and his parents to follow, for weight loss management 3. Conducting testing and effective diagnosis to determine health-related problems and solutions in John 4. Initiating therapies and physical activity plans for John 5. Presenting the alternative leisure and entertainment videos and evaluating his adoption to the changes |
Step 7: The evaluation of outcomes
1. Regularly measuring John’s BMI and weight to determine the efficacy of his weight loss management journey 2. Measuring effectiveness of his adoption to the alternative sources of entertainment by evaluating his aggressiveness and likeness to the videos |
