Transformational leaders are leaders who create a vision for their followers and guide organizational change through motivation and inspiration. They act as role models for their followers and the followers emulate their actions (Bass & Riggio, 2010). They inspire by activating follower self-efficacy so that the followers buy into the idea that they can exceed expectations. There are four key components of transformational leadership: individualized consideration, intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation, and idealized influence (Barbuto Jr, 2005). Individualized consideration is the extent to which a leader builds a close relationship with the employees, attends to their differences and needs, listens to their concerns, and acts as a coach or mentor to them. Intellectual stimulation is the extent to which a leader challenges the assumptions within an organization, takes risks, and motivates followers to think about resolving existing problems in innovative ways. Inspirational motivation is the extent to which a leader articulates an appealing vision and inspires followers with standards, communicating optimism about future goals, and providing meaning to every task. Idealized influence refers to a leader being admired, trusted, and respected. It also emphasizes the need to have a collective sense of mission.
Transformational leadership is possible and desired in all types of organizations. This is because every organization goes through a change from time to time. Change is inevitable in today’s dynamic and highly competitive business world and economy, with changing customer and client preferences and increased innovation. Transformational leadership works best when an organization is undergoing change (Miller et al., 1992). It is, however, important that leaders learn how to integrate the different styles of leadership so that they can choose the most appropriate style depending on what the organization is going through or trying to accomplish at a particular time.
