Discussion 1

Room (2015) is a film that takes its audience into the emotional experience of trauma. The film is about a young boy, Jack, and a girl named Ma. Ma was kidnapped and kept in a room for seven years. She cannot comprehend her world as a result of being in isolation for years. During Jack’s fifth birthday, Ma decided that it was time he learned about the outside world. Jack, having been accustomed to the “Room”, sees everything as a singular presence. He is only used to sharing his space with Toilet, Door, Bed, and Wardrobe. This shows the effect of being in captivity, as Jack struggles to get used to the outside world.

Discussion 2

Having been used to experiencing the feel of the outside world only from a skylight, Jack struggles to understand the existence of things beyond what he interacts with in the “Room”. His life is surrounded by repetition and singularness of things. He is very curious and fearful of what exists outside, wanting to know and understand what is going on but always feeling that something bad and scary is about to happen. Jack’s experience is exactly what people held in captivity for years go through when they are released. They experience feelings of fear and curiosity in almost equal measure.
