ANSWER
Week 10: Resilience Worksheet
City resilience is a topic of great importance when it comes to climate change and disaster management, and cities around the world are actively making changes to ensure that they bounce forward after climate change-related disasters.
For this assignment, begin by finding an example from the past year of a city resilience project that has been featured in the news. Once you have identified a suitable example, please answer the questions below. (Hint:

ABC (Australian Broadcasting Company)
The Resilient Melbourne project represents various resilience principles; fostering inclusive and healthy cities, building a biophilic urbanism in the city and its bioregion, investing in renewable and distributed energy, and finally shaping disaster recovery for future are the principles represented by this project.
The principles guiding the implementation make it very suitable and recommended to other cities; it does not require the acquisition of more land and infrastructure but will be implemented on the existing land and infrastructure. This project not only looks forward to solving acute climatic shocks like bushfires, floods, heatwaves and disease pandemics but also looks forward to solving the chronic stresses; increase in social inequality, rapid population growth, unemployment amongst the youth, family violence, pressure on the natural resources and many more. This project is inclined to unite all the 32 communities in Melbourne by ensuring the active involvement of individuals, community groups and the largest corporations and institutions in the city. Finally, this project is cost-effective, measurable and replicable; it will see the communities develop remedies to current and future climatic changes, offering a city with high quality of life to all its existing citizens and generations to come. These and many more reasons make this project worth recommending to other cities since it solves key challenges both economically and socially in the community and city level.
Orange County is a coastal community; it is likely to be affected significantly by climate change in the coming years. Studies have shown that climate change may lead to a significant rise in sea level of more than one foot in 40 years and approximately 4-5 feet by the end of the century along the Orange County Coast; the rise in sea level accompanied with natural land erosion is likely to lead to the submergence of the land structures. Recent research and studies have shown that the sea tides might rise due to frequent flood events, thereby rendering it very strong, unpredictable and destructive. Research shows that the ocean absorbs nearly a quarter of the carbon dioxide humans produce in the atmosphere; an increase in the carbon dioxide will lead to chemical reactions making the ocean water more acidic, affecting marine life. Ocean acidification is likely to increase up to 150% by the end of the century; this will primarily affect the major economic activity (fishing) in the area since the survival of shellfish and fish will be at stake, thus significantly impacting the livelihood of the community members and also the local industries.
Orange County should focus on real-time responses and relief collaborations across local nonprofits, businesses and government platforms to curb the climatic changes. The local leaders should put more efforts into the ongoing advanced innovative solutions to address threats from climate change-driven droughts, floods, heatwaves and sea tides. The town could also adopt advanced LiDAR technology to reduce fire risk and improve carbon sequestration in the nearby forests. Advanced geospatial technology to know where trees are required most will help minimize the urban heat-island effect in the less advantaged communities. Discouragement of deforestation and adoption of tree-planting activities should be embraced to enhance a greener environment and economy. The Coastal Conservancy has reached out to those with local projects to minimize the impacts of climate change, funding them appropriately; the local leadership strongly advocates against implementing environmentally destructive projects with traces of harmful carbon, i.e., the proposed desalination plant in Huntington Beach. Finally, Orange County Coast keepers should improve and restore the eelgrass because of its capability to provide habitats and food for various marine species and for its high oxygen production and ability to remove carbon dioxide in the sea.
I have been involved occasionally in climate change, both knowingly and unknowingly; getting involved in the burning of fossil fuels, which has led to increased carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere; this results in acidic rain precipitation, hence plant destruction. It is evident that urbanization sequentially leads to industrialization, leading to increased emission of toxic gases into the atmosphere. Thereby an increase in the poisonous emissions significantly contributes to the greenhouse effect, increasing atmospheric heat. Positively, I have been involved in tree planting activities in my hometown to create a healthy and fresh atmosphere with minimal heat. I am currently also engaged in some research activities based on future climatic changes and possible ways of mitigating the negative impacts resulting from the changes. Finally, I have purposed to ensure proper waste and plastic management to minimize environmental pollution and emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
First, diet change is key to less dependence on fossil fuels; lamb and beef have high carbon footprints, plus sheep burps and beef farts contribute positively to climatic change. Switching to chicken, fish and vegetables will reduce the environmental impacts. Minimal use of plastic materials and improvement on waste management is another way to reduce dependence on fossil fuels; the adoption of well-managed wastes and steel and glass materials will reduce fossil fuel reliance. Electric and driverless cars will help reduce congestion and emissions of toxic gases into the atmosphere by up to 50% by 2050, reducing global warming significantly. Adopting organic agriculture, educating the local netizens on the significance of environmental conservancy, and using solar panels will greatly reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. Finally, the minimization of food waste contributing to greenhouse gases by a humongous 6.7% in the form of methane will help reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and only consume what is sufficient and required by the body.
First, I would start with the food consumption and diet, explain to him how beef and lamb are great contributors to climate change due to their high carbon concentration; our consumption will lead to increased carbon emission in the atmosphere leading to precipitation of acidic rain. Second, I would engage on the effects of cutting down rainforests, explaining how this will lead to global warming due to the high increased concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, leading to less precipitation in the coming months and years because of fewer forests to attract the rains. Finally, I would discuss how fuel-driven cars contribute mainly to global warming and increase the greenhouse effect.
If so, which weeks? (4 to 6 sentences or more)
We did have excellent and exemplary teamwork as a group. Everyone in the group contributed positively and enthusiastically to the assignment. After having an inclusive and detailed climate change and its impacts, our team is now thinking of forming a joint research group intended to forecast future climatic changes and their measures; the team has since decided to actively get involved in community projects to solve climate changes and conserving the environment. The group also intends to form tree-planting projects in the respective communities for every member to minimize and regulate the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. Fair enough, our group did not have any challenges worth noting in all the weeks, and everybody significantly contributed hence the achievement of an inclusive and fine-detailed discussion.
My favorite topic was hurricane katrina. I was interested in this topic because of its devastating effects on land and the level of destruction that came with it; it is the most disastrous and expensive storm ever witnessed in U.S history. There are so many lessons and precautionary measures that can be learned and adopted from this storm; this will significantly help the local community to prepare appropriately for similar or related climatic changes in the future.
