Art History: Paul Cezanne and how he influenced other artist during his time
Here is a rough outline i made for the paper with a bibliography:
I. Introduction
a. Paul Cezanne, a French painter born in 1839, was known as one of the greatest of the Post-Impressionists. His work and unique aesthetic transformed many artists in the 20th Century.
b. Cezanne’s art challenged the understood or established ways to create art. Many of His works were questioned by viewers due to the unfamiliarity and uniqueness. However, Cezanne used his unique style and eye for art to not only create unreal work of art but to open doors for other artist during his time.
c. Considered the “Father of Modern Art” Paul Cezanne had a strong impact on art and artist during his time. Henri Matisse, George Braque, and Pablo Picasso were just a few well known artists that Cezanne influenced.
II. Henri Matisse
a. Henri Matisse was a well-known French painter who was strongly impacted by Cezanne.
b. Matisse’s admiration for Cezanne and his work began when he purchased the work “Three Bathers”. Painted by Paul Cezanne himself Matisse used this work as an inspiration into his art world. In 1936 Matisse donated the work of art to the Petit Palais, Musee des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris. With the work of art he left a note that read: “In the thirty- seven years I have owned this canvas, I have come to know it quite well, though not entirely, I hope; it has sustained me morally in the critical moments of my venture as an artist; I have drawn from it my faith and my perseverance; for this reason, allow me to request that it be placed so that it may be seen to its best advantage…I know that I do not have to tell you this, but nevertheless think it is my duty to tell you so; please accept these remarks as the excusable testimony of my admiration for this work which has grown increasingly greater ever since I have owned it”.
c. The simple action of Matisse owning a painting of Cezanne’s shows respect and appreciation.
III. Georges Braque
a. Georges Braque, one of the founding fathers of cubism used Cezanne’s unique aesthetic to create paintings.
b. “Paul Cezanne was the largest influence in Braque’s cubist style. Through comparing Fields of Bellevue and The Round Table it is very easy to see the influence Cezanne had on Braque. Both paintings show the break down of objects in to geometric shapes and share a similar earthy color scheme.”
c. Cezanne influenced Braque’s style with his use of geometric shapes and natural colors.

IV. Pablo Picasso
a. Pablo Picasso referred to Cezanne as “The mother havering over”. Picasso learned many things from Cezanne as a artist one being “how to distill the essential from nature in order to achieve a cohesive surface…”
b. Cubism is the abstract style that was created from Picasso’s recreation and abstraction of Cezanne’s work.
c. Closing Sentence
V. Conclusion
a. Matisse, Braque, and Picasso were all influenced by Cezanne and his work. All three-artist learned and progressed from Cezanne.
b. Being considered the “Father of Modern Art”, “The mother hovering over” and the backbone of cubism, it is easy to so the Cezanne had a strong influence on the art world as a whole.
