Cultural and Ethnic Studies: Social Inequality

Option 2

Hello Aden,

Your Facebook post on wealth and income inequality in the country is quite informative and speaks about current issues in society. I do agree with your statement that people have different views and thoughts on the subject and how it should be handled or managed. The issue of income and wealth inequality is sensitive and it would be wrong to generalize how people feel about how to effectively manage it. Income inequality in the United States is very high and is a problem that needs to be addressed. You have stated that it is the role of the federal government to rectify the problem and ensure income and wealth equality in the country. I do not agree with that sentiment or thought. While the government has a role to play in the management of the problem, other agencies and society have more important roles to play.

Income inequality is not only caused by discrimination and unfair wages, but also by factors such as education, skills and training, unemployment, job types, inheritance, and pension rights (Dabla-Norris et al., 2015). The government has important roles to play when it comes to factors such as education, unemployment, and pension rights. Through government policy, the government can ensure that all citizens have access to education and that employers do not practice discrimination. However, society also has a role to play in the rectification of the problem. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that children are taken to school to get an education. Individual responsibility also comes into play where investment in the acquisition of skills and training is concerned. It is only by equipping oneself with skills and training that one can get a well-paying job or even a promotion at the workplace.

Employers also have an important role to play where the selection of employees and development of salary and benefits packages is concerned. Employers should practice fair recruitment practices and provide equal employment opportunity to all people, regardless of their ethnic background, race, gender, or religious background (Tsui et al., 2018). As you have stated, only hard-working and qualified people should be allowed to earn wealth, without any discrimination. Everyone should, therefore, play their part in a combined effort to eradicate the existing income and wealth inequality. Blaming the government for the problem or waiting for the government to distribute wealth to people would not solve the problem.
