Podcast Reflection Discussion
Organizations in the corporate world embrace inclusivity and diversity in the workforce, which are essential in the successful achievement of organizational goals and objectives. However, it can be challenging to manage workforce inclusivity and diversity due to increased unconsciousness biases. This argument aligns with the case made in the podcast, which is quite persuasive. In the podcast, the argument shows that it can be tough to combat unconscious biases (HBR, 2020). This is seen especially when the workforce is highly inclusive, the organization embraces diversity, and managing organizational behavior is arduous. Nevertheless, the podcast provides a solution, which is both inspiring and encouraging. There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. Inequality cases among women and minority groups will eventually reduce, and as the podcast argues, combating biases in organizations can be managed effectively through the efficient intervention of managers (Mihaylo, 2019).
I find it hard to believe managers can single-handedly eliminate or combat biases at work, mainly because some managers are the perpetrators. However, reading the article, I am enlightened to know that managers can profoundly influence equality, equity, and combat biases using simple approaches. For instance, managers can give credit to the affected parties, communicate effectively, and openly. Managers can use inclusive language in all forms of communication channels, minding how they talk and what they say. I agree with the podcast that unconscious biases should be addressed at all levels ranging from the selection and hiring processes to decision-making freedom during a meeting. In addition, this should also apply when assigning employees assignments and conducting promotions (HBR, 2020). These insights help me understand how to treat and manage organizational behavior when in a managerial position in an organization. On a personal level, it helps understand situations that may result in unconscious biases and approaches to mitigate the situation. All managers and leaders should make an effort to read this article, as they will enable change in the workplace (Mihaylo, 2019). Understanding that they can combat unconscious biases through inclusive communication and addressing the root causes may save company costs incurred outsourcing assistance and intervention.
