HIS 200: Project 1
Historical Event
The project requires the selection of an appropriate historical event for analysis and discussion. For the historical event analysis, I have decided to discuss and analyze the historical desegregation of schools in Boston. This event began with the 1974 decision of federal judge Arthur Garrity to order public schools in Boston to begin the busing of students for purposes of ensuring racial desegregation. The decision became the first major victory for immigrant students after Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. In the analysis and discussion of the historical event, I will discuss the events before the decision and how the desegregation of schools was done. I will also discuss the oppositions that were brought forth in the 1974 case and why the decision to desegregate public schools was arrived at. This historical event is significant for the course and the project since it became one of the biggest cases in the Supreme Court history since it resulted in law changes that began the process of desegregating immigrants and locals in the educational setting.
Primary and Secondary Sources
Both primary and secondary sources of information will be used in the research project. The following are some of the primary and secondary data sources that will be used:
Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, 347 U.S. 483 (1954). (n.d.). https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/347/483/
This record of the 1954 case provides a primary data source for information about the case and why its ruling was seemingly overturned by the 1974 decision of the Supreme Court.
UMB. (n.d.). Research Guides: Selected Resources Documenting School Desegregation: Overview of School Desegregation Research Guide. https://umb.libguides.com/desegregation.
This source provides data on the history of school desegregation in Boston, beginning with the 1954 case, the 1974 win, and the changes that occurred in the Boston education system.
Patterson, J. T., & Freehling, W. W. (2001). Brown v. Board of Education: A civil rights milestone and its troubled legacy. Oxford University Press.
This book provides a recount of all the cases that led to the introduction of reforms in the education system, discussing the evolution of the education system from segregation to the years after the desegregation of public schools.
Blum, L. (2019). Reflections on Brown vs. Board of Education and School Integration Today. The Harvard Review of Philosophy.
This source presents a review of the historical events that led to the desegregation of the education system and the integration that schools enjoy today. Lessons from the desegregation period and key takeaways from the evolution of education for immigrants are also discussed.
Research Question
For the project research, I will seek to understand how the historical event affected the people living at the time and the effects of the judge’s decision on the society and the school system. The following are the research questions for the research:
Audience and Message
The immigrant population would be the most appropriate audience for this research. By reading the research paper, the population would acquire a better understanding of the history of the desegregation of schools in the country and the important events that made it possible for students from the white and the black communities to school together today. To effectively convey the message, it will be important to interpret historical terminology to make it easier for the population to understand.
