History American government- write an email
To: The Governor of California
Question 1: Content of the emails
Dear Governor,
The United States is a country that has embraced social diversity, something is not only reflected in its demographic composition but also organizations including the political system. The recent demographic report indicates to show the country is in increasingly becoming ethnically and racially diverse. Many organizations are now grappling with how to build a workforce which mirrors the changing demographics. Most people believe that this is a good thing but there are some say that diversity introduces a set of challenges. One of the notable change linked to demographic shift and diversity is evident is the political scene.
There has been a great change in the composition of the US congress. Thus, the US is currently having the most diverse Congress ever. The 116th congress is regarded as the most diverse in congressional history since it is characterized by more women as well as ethnic and racial minorities than the former congress. The congress is composed of a large number of new members who have ever served in the military for a long time. It has 131 women, 53 African Americans, 50 Latino or Hispanic members, 20 Asian Americans and 4 American Indians.
As suggested before, social diversity in the organization has raised concerns in the country with some believing it’s a good thing while others thinking it will be a challenge. For instance, individuals are concerned about the effects of diverse congress on various issues including legislation. Some people think that diversity can shape how lawmakers vote as well as the interest that they will support and fight for. In my view, a diverse congress will effectively drive changes in the United States through the formulation of laws and regulations. With such a diverse congress, legislators can actively advocate for the rights of nationals from their respective groups. What is your take on this?
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Question 2: Experience
I emailed Gavin Newsom, the governor of California. I found it a pleasure to send an email to the Governor. I considered it as an opportunity for me to present to him an issue that I believe is important to me and the American Citizen in general. I desired to make the Governor understand that as citizens were are concerned about other people’s view about our political system and support diversity in the congress. However, many questions were running in my mind while writing the email. I will not admit that it was easy. I asked myself whether the governor would read through my email, whether the message would reach him in person, whether the governor finds the methods of communication useful to him or not, whether I would get feedback or not because emails are easily ignored, whether he will find the message presentable or not. Having these questions in mind, I knew I needed to write something presentable and show my understanding of the issue. One cannot effectively argue an issue with incorrect or incomplete facts.
I was forced to research the issue within a short period to gain more knowledge to effectively present the issue and prepare for engagement in case of a question from him. I did some background check to find the governor’s contact details and the reliable means of communication. Indeed, this was not a simple task. To get the correct contact detail, I had to seek help from others and go through the US public database.
This week, you’ll learn about some current issues related to congress and the executive, including congress’s changing demographics, the president’s emergency powers, and the changing relationship between the two branches. You’ll also reach out to your representative via email for the first time. Students tend to really enjoy this activity and report major gains in political efficacy and engagement after contacting representatives. I encourage you to leave yourself time to work on a high-quality letter, but don’t feel too overwhelmed by the hype of writing an elected official!
