Global Comparative Perspective on Diversity
Organizational CSR and Global Consciousness
CSR in business involves the mandate and duty among companies to act in the best interests of people and the planet in their journey of profit making. On the other hand, global consciousness is the ability for organizations to understand international, cross-cultural systems, interconnections, and demonstrate open-mindedness in the operations, processes, and policies. Showing CSR and global consciousness depict the diversity and inclusivity levels in an organization. Organizations can express social and global consciousness in four primary ways (Dekker, 2016). They include developing social and global inclusive mission statements and business systems, integrating ethical practices, especially in labor, enhancing a learning climate in the organization, and collaborating with other companies and society to maximize their involvement in social and global development as well as sustainability.
Socially and global conscious organizations enjoy monetary and non-monetary benefits, which establish the importance of demonstrating consciousness. Being conscious maximizes an organization’s awareness of its existence, roles, and contribution to the broader community, which translates into happy employees, investors, shareholders, and community. When organizations protect the planet and contribute to the development of people, they maximize profit acquisition, as sustainable processes are developed. Moreover, they are perceived as inclusive and diverse, which keeps employees and customers, drivers and determinants of success, engaged and motivated (Dekker, 2016). Concisely, social and global consciousness in an organization keeps the organization focused on both the corporate purpose and the collective unification of the broader community for sustainable success and competitive advantage.
Challenge and Benefit of Technology and Social Media to Social Movement
The 21st century is characterized by advanced technology and revolutionized modus operandi among social movements. The presence of advanced technology that has resulted in smartphones and social media platforms have caused rapid changes in disseminating information, inciting mass support, and engaging people, as they mostly do it in virtual ‘communities.’ These aspects have posed both benefits and challenges to social movements (Carty, 2018). One primary advantage is that through social media platforms such as Twitter Facebook, Instagram, among others, social movements can acquire a broad base of followers and influence many people across the globe. Social media has made the world a global village, where people from all continents with a shared interest can form a community, where they discuss, conduct debates, and influence policy change through petitions and digital technologies to facilitate activism and mass influence (Carty, 2018). For instance, earlier this week in Minneapolis, the power of media was felt when advocating for end or racism and respect for human rights.
However, a significant challenge experienced is that technology and social media have revolutionized the modus operandi of social movements, including their processes and contexts, in relation to collective action and activism. Online or virtual communities formed on social media platforms have resulted in minimal content and presence of crowds, which were previously considered essential in the growth, purpose attainment, and fulfillment of the collective action among social movements (Carty, 2018). Social media and digital technologies have made formal organization among social movements increasingly obsolete, which has changed the activism actions to passive methods in contrast to the active, influential crowds demonstration and industrial action previously used. Adopting these digital technologies has become more challenging to integrate into their organization, hence stalling their activities and achieving their goals and objectives. In conclusion, technology and social media have resulted in both benefits and limitations in the operations of social movements.
Ways to be Global Minded as an Organization and Initiatives
Global minded organizations must integrate international, cross-cultural systems, interconnections, and demonstrate open-mindedness in the operations, processes, and policies. My workplace can be global-minded by integrating more global expertise in the workforce, developing a universal mantra or mission, connecting international offices, and empowering employees to be more inclusive and culturally responsive (Kelly, 2019). Achieving these strategies would require strategic, cultural, process, and operational changes, whereby the organizational structure must be changed to accommodate the interconnection of foreign offices. Cultural changes would involve changing the corporate culture to communicate a global mantra and mission. Process changes would be experienced in the hiring, selection, and recruiting department, as the company must hire global expertise for inclusiveness and diversity (Kelly, 2019). Resources necessary in this case would include financial resources to fund the change initiative, human resources such as a team of employees to execute the change, and physical resources such as facilities, offices, and equipment. Being global-minded invokes many organizational changes as outlined above, which for effective change management and implementation must be accompanied by adequate resources.
