Literature

Local color literature written by Twain, **ens, and Hardy is accused of calling StE into question as the major medium of communication. However, some argue that this type of literature embellishes the language. Read this section in your textbook and use your background as an English major to write a short opinion paper about this argument. This will be part of your quiz grades to make up for our inability to have in-class quizzes. Your paper should be 500 words at least and should use two sources other than your textbook.

Local Color Literature

The primary aim of STE language is the creation of simplified texts for the readers. To write in STE effectively, the author has to have a good knowledge of the subject that the writer is writing about. This is an effective combination of writing in STE language. The local color literature plays a significant role in promoting writing in STE since it focuses on the specific locality of the reader, simplifying the writing language to meet the local reader’s demands.

Local color literature is a style of writing marked with a representation of peculiarities and features of a specific locality and its inhabitants (Morgan, 2017). Local literature has emphasized the environment’s environment over the habits, people, and customs. Relatively, it includes dialect to effectively depict the cadence of speech within that particular place. Most of the authors of local color literature focused on the vivid descriptions of their specific localities. The local literature relied on local colloquialisms and local linguistic traits (Palmer, 2008). For instance, a local color writer would include their local words interspersed with English. Therefore, the writer often added local color to a narrative to relate the writing to the setting’s areas. The local color literature is perceived to be a particular setting, with most writers placing the setting not incidental but fundamental. The local color information initiated a setting that gave rise to a certain medium of communication through simplified language for a specific locality.

The most important thing with local literature is that it offers the phonetical potential of the language and acts as the laboratory for simplifying the language for the local readers. It also breaks the complexity of the language. The globalization and localization of writing have contributed to the diversification of language since voices reach a wider audience. Ideally, local color writing was essential since it aimed at using language in a way that it will best bring out the language without altering the language to the extent that it is a valuable medium of exchange. The local literature used dialect to establish the authenticity and credibility of regional characters.

Local literature relied on realism, which revolved around a community and the personality traits of a region. Realism, as seen in local color literature, promotes linguistic realism, which encourages individuals to draw their conclusions and observations from the world around them while reading. In the local color literature, one identifies with the dual influence of realism and regionalism.

The local literature writers build the language since they look away from ordinary life to strange customs, distant lands, and exotic scenes to offer a detailed sense of accuracy and fidelity of description (Palmer, 2008). The local color literature supports the language since it incorporates a wider concept through sectional differences. Local color literature builds on language realism since it solidifies an imagined community through consuming images and nation’s stories that contribute to knowledge in a language that is not derived from textually but from the critical location.

Local color literature supports a more diverse representation of national communities’ teaching of language. Ideally, local color literature focuses on the specific features of an area that enables mastering a language more effectively. It thus contributes to a person feeling at home within the society, which facilitates internal security and cooperation.
