Crazy Horse
Born in1840 and died in 1877, Crazy Horse was raised in Oglala Lakota tribe, Sioux. He became influential in the Lakota tribe, and is famously known because of leading an Indian War Party to victory at the Little Bighorn Battle of 1876.The name Crazy Horse was given to him upon reaching maturity inheriting it from his father, who welcomed it warmly (Hood 30).
Crazy Horse was a husband to one wife called Black Shawl, and his daughter was called They Are Afraid of Her. However, he did not intend to marry Black Shawl; their marriage was a result of fate. When he was shot on the battlefield, Black Shawl was sent to help him heal; he fell in love with her and later married.
History tells it that Crazy Horse had a first lover called Black Buffalo. Nevertheless, Black Buffalo came to marry someone called No Water. Still, Crazy Horse went on to pursue her, the time her husband was on a hunting mission, fleeing with her. This did not end up well since it triggered the returning of his Shirt Wearers’ which he gained through participation in the two battles in 1965. He was forced by the society to return the shirt purporting that he endangered the tribal unity by his shameful act.
According to Hood (47), to mend the relationship, hunka ceremony had to be celebrated. This was according to Lakota culture, in which the hunka ceremony was celebrated to strengthen the ties between disagreeing persons such as that of Crazy Horse and No Water.
At a tender age, a war known as the Grattan Massacre broke out between the Lakota tribe and the U.S. federal government. The conflict erupted in 1854 on the northern plains as a result of a deadly dispute over an ox that wandered away from a Mormon wagon train. This incident affected Crazy Horse, and he grew knowing that the whites were terrible people who should be killed.
Crazy Horse was a trusted war leader of Lakota and Cheyenne warriors. Because of his bravery, his war team inflicted on The Great Plains defeating the U.S. Cavalry in what was known as ‘‘The Fetterman Massacre.’’
Crazy Horse first crossed paths with Custer in 1873 when he passed through Sioux territory. They met at a place near Yellowstone River. Fort Laramie’s Treaty of 1868 declared that the Sioux belonged to the South Dakota Black Hills, but the deal was later broken because prospectors discovered gold in the region. General George Armstrong Custer was sent by the U.S. government to lead a surveying party (Hood 52). When the Sioux refused to sell those lands, they were ordered by the government on smaller reserves, which the Native Americans refused.
Like the Game of Thrones’ line, “What good is power if you cannot protect the ones you love?” The indisputable power that Crazy Horse had as a knight could not save him time and time again from having tragedy visit him. The centerpiece battle that took place in part of the 1800s between the Lakota and US was a classic tale in which iconic, courage, and anguish mixed readily. He readily defended his people to the last drop of his blood amidst the American expansions (Oldfield 95).
Since gold was discovered in Montana, the prospects decided to seek a shortcut known as Bozeman Trail. By then, Lakota Sioux Tribe had a leader called Red Cloud. Bozeman Trail crossed through important Lakota Sioux hunting grounds, meaning it was a trespass by gold prospectors into Indian land. The Lakota Sioux responded by attacking them. However, the travel of Red Cloud to Washington, D.C. persuaded him of the strength of the Americans, believing Oglala had to seek peace. He became converted and baptized into Catholicism by Father Bushman (Oldfield 76). According to the Native Americans, this decision was worth terming ‘Heyoka,’ meaning foolish.
In episode ten of chapter four of crazy Horse’s series, Nietzsche says, “In your presence, they feel small, and their baseness glimmers and glows against you with a hidden vengeance.”, In the Black Hills, we see Crazy Horse hunting miners, and some of the Lakota chief shaking hands with the enemies. He is also fighting at Slim Buttes by cutting horses open and helping in hiding babies inside to save them from freezing. Crazy Horse says goodbye to Sitting Bull, giving up, and accepting 250 Bruls lure from Crook. Red Cloud and Spotted Tail chiefs betrays him, a glittering example of the cooperation between the Lakota and the U.S planning for a murder hence coming to Crazy Horse end of history.
Even after the surrender, Crook still feared that the warrior could return to battle and avoided meeting him. However, from the statement of his father ‘‘he was killed by too much talk,’’, it was clear that Crazy Horse had totally surrendered and was harmless (Oldfield 108).
In conclusion, Crazy Horse was a brave warrior of its kind, however, he should have not surrendered as it is known with warriors to be taking stance till the last drop of the blood.
