New versus Used Restaurant Equipment
In opening a restaurant business, acquisition of equipment is among the first factors to consider. New equipment can be quite expensive and beyond one’s budget. In this case, it would be wise to consider purchasing second-hand gently used equipment. At the initial purchase, used equipment is cheaper than new equipment and would help to save a significant amount of cash that can be directed to other needs such as insurance and payroll. It is easier to negotiate the price with the seller of a used item. It is also possible to find equipment that has been used for just a few years and has remaining warranty (Hotel Restaurant Supply, 2020).
Even with all these advantages, some equipment is better bought new than used. In most cases, used equipment is not returnable to the seller, does not have a transferrable warranty, might not be the brand and model you prefer and is more costly to operate and repair. As the manager of the new restaurant, I would recommend that the refrigerators and freezers are purchased new. This will assure us that our equipment are in line with the health code. These equipment will serve us for the better part of their useful life as long as our restaurant is in operation. Refrigeration equipment are very expensive to repair and buying new equipment will save us significant costs of repair and reduce the loss of refrigerated inventory. Ice machines would also best be bought new to avoid cross-contamination (RestoHub, 2020). Health inspections can reveal cross-contamination that can cost us more than we were trying to save by buying used equipment and in the worst-case scenario may cause our restaurant to be shut down.
