Faith Versus Reason in Exorcist
Over the years, faith and reason have been considered to be the bases of justifying religious belief. Faith and reason have authority upon which beliefs can rest. The crisis of faith and reason exists when there is a serious question of whether what one believes and is committed to what is actually true. The Exorcist is a novel in the horror genre which tells a story of demonic possession in a young girl named Regan MacNeil. Exorcist bring about conflict between reason and faith. Considerably, a number of characters are willing to agree with the supernatural entity that Regan has possessed through pursuing scientific descriptions for what the young girl is experiencing.
The fictional father Damien Karras experienced paralyzing doubts after his mother’s demise. Karras embodies faith and reason most fully. He is a priest and scientist with flattering faith who discharges supernatural through rationalizations as the handling mechanisms. Karras greatly fights with guilt since he was not able to assist his mother arguing reason onto a faith issue as a way to manage the unmanageable.
Tensions exist between Karras’s religious and rational sides after he accepts both aspects of his intellect. Karras doubts Regan’s possession but also doubts his faith. For instance, he does not want to associate Jesus with the ugliness of the world but he cannot see God’s love and kindness among the suffering. Karras challenges the demon to possess him by acknowledging supernatural existence and fighting evil with his reason.
Chris also reveals many aspects of faith and reason despite the fact that she began as an atheist who understands nothing about science. Chris is rational since he pays attention to whatever is the best chance to help her daughter at the moment. She easily falls on supernatural explanations but still wants a logical explanation for what is happening. The Exorcist shows the interrelationship of reason and faith and how their separation leads towards superstition and myth.
