Education institutions are facing various social problems such as disability discrimination, bullying, school shootings, and racial discrimination. Bullying entails, a repeated aggressive behavior of intimidation that leads to stress and feelings of being inferior (Swearer and Hymel, 2015). Negative outcomes of bullying have resulted in teen suicide. American public schools have experienced at least an episode of crime linked to school shootings. Such incidents have been characterized by verbal and physical actions such as social rejection leading to several deaths. Racial discrimination at school has been evident where the students are being separated from other students due to their skin color or race (Meyer, 2015). Relatively, disability discrimination has existed where students learn in groups that are categorized based on their test scores and performance in class.

Social Problems with Education Institutions and Drug Abuse

Social problems within social institutions have perpetuated drug abuse as a way of escaping bullying, racial, and disability discrimination in school. On the micro and macro levels, students undergoing different social problems that complicate their efforts to learn have felt that drug abuse is an effective way of eliminating their stress, anxiety, and depression. At the micro-level such forces have been important insights to small group and individual processes leading to drug addiction.

Considerably, social problems within schools have resulted in concentration difficulties, emotional distress, sleep interruptions, the challenge in relating to others, fearing their safety, and misunderstanding socially acceptable behaviors. For instance, substance abuse has been used to escape bully and feelings of powerlessness, social isolation, and depression (Vanderbilt and Augustyn, 2010). Over time, using drugs and alcohol to cope with discrimination has resulted in drug abuse. The students have learned to eliminate negative feelings and boost their positive feelings through the use of drugs and alcohol. Therefore, they have learned to use the substance to cope up with stress.

Drug users are more likely to result in heavy drug users. Excessive substance use has led to school drop-out due to behavioral and attitude changes. Teens that have been involved in drug abuse have a high rate of absence from school, low grades, and a high potential for school drop-out. This is because as the teens begin using drugs they get addicted affecting their engagement where they begin missing school and finally not coming to school at all.

Actual Solution to The Social Problems Within Education

The main reason for overcoming social problems within education institutions is that they offer a lot of opportunities to the teens to practice within different social situations. Education is an actual solution in addressing the social problems within schools. The school systems should identify the different social problems that are the main causes of anxiety and depression within the schools and educate the student regarding different ways of fighting social issues. For instance, educating students on problem-solving skills through the use of role-plays, activities, and games during school will enable them to solve various social problems that they encounter in schools (Taylor, Oberle, Durlak and Weissberg, 2017). Education policies will also play a great role in addressing social problems within schools. School policies are entail established norms and expectations for certain behavior within schools. These will be put in place to guide the daily function of the school to make it conducive for learning and reducing social problems within the educational institution.

Education will play a great role in promoting social progress and change since it will shape values, increase self-confidence, social skills, and lower social inequality within schools. On the contrary, drug abuse as a solution will result in poor performance, school dropout, and health consequences. Drug misuse will result in the short term and long term health effects as well as negatively impact growth and development.
