Overview of Criticism (the diary of a young girl by Anne Franck)
Ann Frank’s novel The Diary of a Young Girl offers a rich understanding of freedom in the social setting. Everyone should have the right and privilege to enjoy various opportunities without any form of limitations. However, aspects such as religion and race often interfere with people’s rights and freedoms. The novel highlights how some groups suffer from anxiety due to anti-Jewish laws. “Our lives were not without anxiety, since our relatives in Germany were suffering from Hitler’s anti-Jewish laws” (Frank 6). Individuals live in fear and anxiety due to the lack of appropriate laws that support their welfare. “Our many Jewish friends and acquaintances are being taken in droves, treated roughly and transported on cattle cars” (Frank 36). Escape is an impossible action since they are grounded. These are key examples of mistreatment evidenced in the novel due to the denial of freedom to live as people desire. Religious and ethnic differences sideline people forcing the majority to look down on the minorities. Overall, the novel offers an in-depth understanding of the need to develop a collective responsibility.
Annotated Bibliography
Anggeria, Feny. “Racism in Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl: An Appraisal Analysis.” (2016).
Anngeria believes that the novel The diary of a young girl is exaggerated. The author uses a heightened voice that intensifies racial statements. The authoritative voice fails to paint an ideal picture of the Jewish people’s experiences and conditions during the Nazi policy. Thus, it fails to enable the readers to assess racial discrimination that exists in the community. Therefore, this article disregards the denial of rights and freedom to live as individuals aspire.
Bos, Pascale. “Reconsidering Anne Frank: Teaching the diary in its historical and cultural context.” Anne Frank’s The Diary of Anne Frank (2010): 101.
Bos concentrates on the promise of optimism amidst the horror events that people encountered during the Holocaust. Her ideas align with those of Anna Frank, who provides details of the adverse experiences they underwent at the hands of Nazi leaders. Her works concentrate on the denial of freedom and rights but offer the hope for a better tomorrow.
Dearborn, George Van Ness. “Review of a Young Girl’s Diary” The Journal of Abnormal Psychology and Social Psychology (1922): 220a.
This article concentrates on the evolution of young people into adulthood, experiences, and challenges encountered. It goes against the idea that everyone should be given the freedom to do what they want and desire, as incorporated in the novel The Diary of a young girl. This article finds that young men and women might encounter “horrid” obstacles on the path of growth and development, calling for parental guidance. Thus, it goes against the freedom call.
Kopf, Hedda Rosner. Understanding Anne Frank’s The Diary of a young girl: A student casebook to issues, sources, and historical documents. Greenwood Publishing Group, 1997.
The article provides an understanding of the experiences of the Jews during the Nazi policy. They suffered under the current leadership, where they experienced denial of their rights and freedoms. The young girl’s experiences inform the readers about the unsupportive political and social systems in place. It supports the ideas of systemic rules that affect the welfare of minority populations, as mentioned in the novel The Diary of a young girl.
