Black Lives Matter protests and Covid-19

This summer’s Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality and systemic racism have been labeled the largest protests in U.S. history. Provide TWO reasons why these protests attracted so many participants. Lastly, share your thoughts: what do you see as ONE potential long-term consequence of the 2020 BLM protests?

Black Lives Matter (BLM) can be described as a devolved social and political movement that advocates for non-violent civil disobedience against all racially driven violence and police brutality against blacks (Blum, 2020). There have been several BLM protests before, nevertheless, things appeared different (many participants were involved including the whites) during the BLM 2020 protests. What could be the reasons behind the great protest?  One of the reasons that explain why the protest attracted many participants was because police brutality that was gruesome and obvious.  Despite complaining of the failure to breathe, the white policeman still kept his Knee on Mr. Floyd’s neck, exhibiting an act of injustice. The black man was incapacitated and unarmed and therefore the police couldn’t say they feared for their lives. Many participants revealed that they were disappointed by the police, seeing Floyd’s death made them uncomfortable to stay at home.

Protests matter to individuals who are in power. For instance, Floyd’s protests significantly increased the shifting of public views regarding racism. Today, many Americans support the claim that black lives matter. Despite the negative effects associated with protests, including massive unemployment, effects of the pandemic, and widely known cases of police brutality during such events, protestors in the United States were ready to participate in the recent protest following the death of George Floyd. Individuals knew that the only way through which they could be heard is by engaging themselves in great protests. With intense grievances, the police and the officials in power could realize public anger and fear punishment if they fail to take the necessary action. The possible long-term consequence of the BLM protests is the continuous commitment by the police department and leaders to protect the rights of all individuals to avoid the negative effects of such protests.

Identify TWO underlying reasons why people of color have been more adversely affected by the novel coronavirus. Lastly, share your own thoughts: if *you* were charged with directing the response to COVID-19, what would be your number one priority for addressing the racial disparity in health outcomes?

High rates of underlying conditions

Research reveals that black Americans have relatively high rates of heart disease, hypertension, lung disease, and diabetes. Blacks experiencing such illnesses are likely to suffer a lot if they contract the coronavirus. Blacks, Asians Indigenous as well as Latinx Americans carry a high burden of chronic health conditions that puts them to serious problems of covid-19 (Dave et al., 2020). Blacks, Asians, and Latin Americans also experience problems while trying to access better health care.  Access to health care to better/quality health care has been a problem during the covid-19 season (Williams & Collins, 2016). Some have revealed that they lack the necessary financial resources to deal with conditions like diabetes and hence have ended up being severely affected by the novel coronavirus.

Asians, blacks, Indigenous, and Latinx Americans hold many essential jobs

Most individuals who belong to different races mentioned above work in organizations or jobs that put them in close contact with different people who are likely to be experiencing health problems or might be in poor health (Molina, 2010). They find themselves in situations where social distancing becomes more difficult. Data from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reveal that blacks and other non-whites are overrepresented compared to the whole population in various sectors hotel and service industries. Generally, the employment opportunities available to non-Americans put them at greater risk of being harmed by the coronavirus. As a director of the response to the Covid-19, I would ensure that all individuals (non-American and Americans) have equal access to quality health care during the season. I would also encourage non-Americans like Blacks to work from home if possible and allocate funds to cater to the needs of those who may not be able to work at home.
