Stage Design of Wicked the Musical

Wicked is Tony-Award winning musical originally designed at the Gershwin Theatre in New York City. Edward Pierce is the collaborators on the scenic design and explains about the stage design including the initial ideas of the play all the way to the conclusive output that has grown popular with theatre audiences.

The first component is a scale model of the stage that is built to scale of the actual set design. Here all factors are put into consideration including the moving parts, the human characters and the mechanics of on-stage and off-stage transitions. Secondly, is scaling of the show in a really large theatre that makes the audience feel connected to the events on the stage in a nondescript theatre built in the 1970s. To achieve this the set designers built a proscenium arch in the theatre and stretched the design into the audience balcony. This includes bringing the canopies closer to the audience. Another key component is the use of composition, line and proportion to subtly point the audience to the main action on the stage. Set designs also include some general hacks in mechanics like how each moving part should move and chemistry like how when bubbles float in the air and burst they do not leave a soapy residue that could slip the actors during the play. Lastly is the coating and texturing to march the themes of the play while still performing the purpose.
