IFSM 310 3D Printing Stage 2 Assignment
Before you begin this assignment, be sure you have:
Mark has reviewed what you provided to him in Stage 1 and he has asked that you tell him what components he will need to support his “Expansion Plan.” In addition to creating more 3D printed products, he needs to be able to manage his customer orders, supplies, employees, etc. He wants to replace his spreadsheet of customer orders with a small business enterprise resource management (ERP) information system in his facility to help him manage his business effectively. Review the section of the Case Study entitled “Mark’s Expansion Plan” and the additional information provided below to identify all of the requirements Mark has laid out. He wants you to tell him what components he will need and what they do.
Mark has also asked for a diagram that shows how the components you identify will be set up and connected to create his local area network in the 3D printing facility. In order to prepare a diagram, Mark has provided the following description of his facility and his operation.
The facility in the industrial park that I am currently using has a manager’s office, a large supply storage area, a loading dock, and a large open area where the 3D printing operation occurs. When supplies are unloaded and put into the storage area, I would like for my employees to be able to update the inventory system (which would be a part of the ERP system). When an employee takes supplies from the storage area to be used in the printing and packaging processes, I want them to update the inventory system. I currently accept customers’ orders via the telephone and email (through my Gmail account; I have my email address on my Facebook page). My FiOS internet connection drop is in my office area. When I get the ERP system, I want to be able to enter the customer orders into the ERP system. I also need to use the ERP to store my employee records and to have payroll information. Finally, I also want to keep all my financial records (orders, invoices, etc.) in the ERP. As I said earlier (in the Case Study), I want my employees to be able to access the 3D printing systems through a mobile device of some sort so they can move around the facility.
On the diagram, he would like you to designate where the components you listed will be located in his facility – which items will be in his office, which will be elsewhere in the facility, and which ones will be used by employees as they move around the facility.

ANSWER
3D Printing Case Study
Background
Mark Peterson is planning to expand his 3D printing business to house about five full-time employees who will offer 3D printed assistive and accessible devices to the consumers. Mark wants to improve the business by having tracking devices that will track the business transactions, employee’s payroll as well as supplies through an ERP information system which the employees will also have access to the daily transactions. Therefore, to achieve this, Mark will be required to set up the company’s IT infrastructure to manage the additional employees, equipment, and business.
3D Printing Requirements
To meet the requirements of the 3D printing technology, he will need to expand the IT infrastructure with;
A multifunction Printer- This will allow Mark business to scan, print, copy, fax, and email to meet all the business needs with a single machine. This will offer a centralized document distribution, management, and production.
A printer server- The printer server is a server that connects the printers to the computers of the clients through a network. A printer server will be required to help in managing access to 3D printers by all employees. The printer server will manage the print requests as well as give the status information to the network administrators and end-users.
Network Attached Storage- A network-attached storage will enable the employees to store all their 3D production files, business management information as well as training videos. Employees will also access all data through the network.
ERP Requirements
The ERP will offer a continuous and integrated view of the essential business practices using common databases that are preserved with a database management structure. The ERP system will track corporate resources like raw materials, cash, production size as well as business commitments such as payroll and purchase orders. With regards to the functional requirements of the ERP system, the following will be required;
Centralized modules- The centralized modules will allow the employees to manage the grouped task without having to switch applications. Therefore, all the information needs will for a particular operation be controlled in the similar part of the scheme.
ERP Database- The ERP will rely on an integrated database through which all applications will retrieve information. This will ensure that all users rely on a single source ensuring that all teams and departments work on the same information set.
Network Server- A network server is considered as a computer system that is used for major respiratory data and different programs that share A network server will allow Mark to run the ERP management system and enable his employees to access varying applications to handle supplies and manage customer transactions. Additionally, it will also offer Mark the ability to view day to day operations as well as manage production, sales, accounting, distribution, human resources as well as customer service.
Wireless Access Point- The wireless access point will enable mark and the employees to access the LAN network where all the IT infrastructure systems for the business have been connected. This will improve the business flexibility and mobility to access different network devices from any location.
The Relationship Between the Information System, 3D Computer System, and Communication Networks
The relationship between the information system, 3D computer system, and communication networks is that they support each other and are much independent of one another. For a mark to perform the 3D printing he requires the wireless printer. The wireless printer is dependent on a few systems such as computers that are required for designing and sending documents. Good communication and network system will enable the employees to access information from anywhere.
