Motorola Incorporated was an American multinational company founded in 1928 to produce telecommunications technologies. Motorola lost relevance due to a management flaw designed to focus on the company’s core business rather than on technology that had caused a huge disruption in the industry. Eventually, sales declined and the only thing left was a historic patent portfolio but no relevance in the market and quarter after quarter the company could only output losses (Fishman 2014). Experts have strongly felt that should the company at that point have focused on innovations, it would have endured (Forbes.com).

The management planning practises of the company failed to observe that changing landscape of technology and rather than coming up with means and ways to innovate, the leading factor became, how to avoid losses. A lot of talent was lost to competing companies at that time in the many layoffs management conducted, sales declined and stakeholders lost faith in the company. Beyond that, there was no saving Motorola. Taking a lesson from the many successful technology businesses today, management, especially, top management plays a big role in influencing the perceptions of the employees. The business leaders lead an integrated front towards innovation like with the electric car, the social media site or the e-commerce website. Communication carries along from the top to the newest of employees on the objectives of the company which is often to innovate and invent new ways to accomplish things to an anticipating market. At that deterministic point in Motorola’s lifetime, management chose to go backwards rather than frontwards and from then on, the company was in a declining state that eventually led it to its death.
