Abstract

Aristotle’s categories are considered as a way of thinking, learning, and understanding about the world around us. The 10 categories of include quantity, substance, quality, relation, time, place, position, having, doing as well as being affected. Aristotle considered substance as the primary category. This is because one cannot conceive any qualities without substance but can conceive substance without quality. The main conclusion from the division of categories is that one cannot make a general statement about being whole except they have the ten different categories that make something to become a being.

Substance is one that cannot be predicted of anything or said to be in anything. Quantity is the measure of an object that may be continuous or discrete. Quality defines the nature of the object while relation entails how one object may be linked or related to another.  Place entails the position in connection to the surrounding environment while time relates to the course of events for instance last year, today, or yesterday. Position entails a condition of rest that results from an action. Aristotle stated that by having he meant a condition that results from an affection. Doing entails action that produces a change in another object while being affected entails undergoing a reception of change from another object or the object itself.

Aristotle has classified things in the world on the grounds of linguistic considerations. The set of doctrines in Aristotle’s categories offers a framework of inquiry for a broad variety of philosophical investigations. The approaches to defining the world are determined by how one interacts, perceives it, and understands it. Aristotle developed a logical system in the categories that classified and related objects and properties to one another in a hierarchical way. Aristotle proposed that the ten fundamental things can be classified within the ten categories. The ten categories have effectively shown how properties and existence undergo changes.
