Health Promotion Teaching Plan

Summary of Teaching Plan

The teaching plan has focused on health promotion and disease prevention to promote the health and well-being of individuals. Ideally, health promotion programs focus on ensuring that the entire community is healthy. For this paper, the health promotion plan will focus on teenager’s sexual behavior which has been a great community health issue. The health promotion plan has involved the participation of different stakeholders that will be effective in increasing knowledge and ideas regarding health safety and strategies that are linked to the promotion of health within the community.

The program aims at empowering and engaging teenagers and young adults to choose healthy sexual behaviors and patterns that will lower the risk of developing diseases such as STIs and HIV. The health promotion programs have also enabled people to have high control over their own health. This is because they have covered a wide range of environmental and social interventions that have been designed to protect and benefit individuals whose health and quality of life have been affected. The health promotion plan focuses on preventing and addressing the cause of irresponsible sexual activities but not just paying attention to the prevention of sexual engagement.

Health promotion within the community has been the duty of all individuals which includes all stakeholders who have an interest in promoting health within the community. This interest can be in the form of working in the community health promotion programs and volunteering as a health practitioner in the community. Ideally, the poor communities have unhealthy environments, lower levels of education, and restricted access to affordable food, health, and a safe place to exercise and play reduced access to healthcare, and less stable housing as compared to upper and middle-income communities. However, it is important for healthcare practitioners to ensure that the people living in the community are gaining access to the available healthcare and having essential education on how to gain access to healthcare services.

Considerably, there are several health needs linked to teenagers’ sexual behavior among Latin youths that have led to great health risks to citizens within the community. Some of the needs comprise living below the poverty level, limited access to healthcare services and health insurance as well as an increase in the disease process (Ertl et al., 2018). These needs have been required by the residents of the community to have better lives. The duty of the health practitioners is to ensure that the patients have received quality care that they deserved since lack of available resources to promote health will make it difficult for the people.

Epidemiological Rationale for Topic

Sexuality has been a major aspect of human beings while sexual activity to human development among young individuals in the United States. Arguably, as adolescents develop they have access to holistic, evidence-based as well as non-stigmatizing details, services, and education that facilitate health and long life reproductive and sexual well-being and health. During adolescence, many young individuals tend to engage in sexual behavior as well as develop intimate and romantic relationships (CDC, 2016). Evidence has indicated that there has been a huge proportion of teenagers within the community that is engaging in sexual activities very early within Latin youths.

The reports from healthcare organizations have indicated that many individuals that have engaged in sexual activities have led to unplanned sexual behaviors s well as many sexually transmitted diseases. A high percentage of teenagers have indicated that they engage in sexual intercourse with at least one person at their age. A very low percentage of students indicate that they or their partners use condoms during sexual intercourse. This has greatly affected the trends in sexually transmitted diseases since teenagers are engaging in sex at an early stage due to a lack of sexual education. For instance, in 2015, around 40% of teenagers had engaged in sex as well as other sexual activities (CDC, 2016). Relatively, it was found out that 21% had engaged in drug abuse while 14% never relied on preventative measures during sexual activities (CDC, 2016).

Ideally, the statistics have demonstrated a threatening trend with regards to sexual activities among adolescents as well as the sexual risks such as sexually transmitted diseases, depression, and unintentional pregnancies. There are a number of cases that are linked to HIV infections among adolescents between the age of 13 and 25 years within the United States. Among the teenagers that have engaged in sexual behaviors and are infected with HIV, there exists gays and bisexuals

Young adults and adolescents require access to essential reproductive and sexual healthcare services. Ideally, most healthcare providers fail to talk to adolescents about sexual health concerns while undertaking primary healthcare interventions (Santa Maria et al., 2017). Despite the guidance on evaluating the needs for genders for reproductive and sexual health services over the years, there are gaps that still remain with regards to sexual health education among teenagers.

The stated policies and interventions in the health promotion plan have focused on health counteractive activities that have empowered different groups of individuals within the community to control their individual and natural factors that affect the health outcomes. For instance, the health promotion program has policies and procedures that teach about preventative sexual measures among adolescents.

Evaluation of Teaching Experience

The Knowledge that youth acquire, influences their attitudes, and values which affects their future well-being. Most of the teenagers in the United States have their reproductive health as vulnerable especially girls. This is because of the rate of unintended pregnancy as well as sexually transmitted diseases that have remained high among young females. In order for the youths and adolescents to make appropriate decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health, they require good information and education which influences their attitudes and values. (Mullinax, Mathur, and Santelli, 2017). However, engaging adolescents and youths in health promotion programs have been a challenge since the majority are less interested in engaging in lessons. Therefore, it is important to engage in the right strategy that will lead their interests since they are fast learners. Over the years, adolescents in school have greatly relied on technology in their studies and daily life. This makes technology resources one of the most effective strategies that would build an effective teaching experience. Many youths are ready to engage in a more interactive and easier teaching experience.

Within this health promotion program, the students come from diverse backgrounds which means that it has to focus on the diversity of teenagers engaging in the health program. The curriculum-based approach is one of the most effective approaches that constitute an effective strategy that will address sexual behavior among adolescents. The curriculum-based approach is effective in a wide-ranging geographic area with varying cultural settings as well as youths from both sexes and varying income levels.  The curriculum-based approach was implemented in community agencies, schools, and health facilities where young adults would frequently assemble.

One of the major considerations was cultural disposition due to the different cultural backgrounds of the students. This was to ensure that the materials used were broken down in such a way that all the students would understand. The students responded appropriately to the lessons which included different topics that were related to the issue of sexual behavior among the teenagers. The lessons had scheduled sessions that included practical and theory sessions. The lessons also stepped out with an intense discussion of why individuals often are infected when they engage in sexual activities and the cause of sexual engagement. The learning experience was boosted by videos and presentations that boosted the understanding of the students.

Community Response to Teaching

Considerably, as an educator, it is important to understand the most effective way through which the audience can be engaged. For instance, with regards to the youths, one of the most effective methods that offer opportunities while offering them practical learning is engaging their curiosity. This is because it enables the learners to develop their self-esteem in the learning process. If the approach is incorporated in the appropriate way, then the teachers and learners will enjoy participating in the lessons. However, there are challenges regarding parenting with regard to teaching adolescents about sexual activities. Some of the parents are receptive since they feel that they cannot speak to their children about sexual activities. However, some of them speak to the children when it’s too late. However, within the specific community, the parents were ready and open to talk about sexual activities. They supported the sexual education program since they believed that this is one of the most effective ways through which their children can be saved from risks linked to sexual behaviors among teenagers.

Areas of Strengths and Areas of Improvement

Health promotion programs offer education linked to health practices that enable individuals to boost their health literacy efforts which boost their healthy behaviors and actions. Considerably, these activities comprise multi-sectoral activities for large populations to boost positive health outcomes. Various programs and policies that respect the promotion of health have to be comprehensive and participatory.

The community teaching work plan effectively outlined the basic architecture for conducting a health program that was aimed at offering knowledge to adolescents regarding the threats and dangers that are linked to sexual activities at their age. This is because most teenagers are engaging in irresponsible sexual activities. Considerably, students that engaged in the lessons gained knowledge that would enable them to take measures that prevent them from being engaged in sex in their teenage years. The lessons are expected to lower the number of unintended pregnancies as well as low the number of sexually transmitted infections among the youth. The health program also has areas of improvement such as additional programs such as ways to handle unintended pregnancies, depression that comes with unintended sex engagement, and challenges of sexuality. Incorporating sexual education in the education curricular will also be effective in boosting knowledge among teenagers (Butler, Sorace, and Beach, 2018).

Conclusion

Health promotion is a concept that has gained interest and attention from health professionals. Despite the fact that most health workers have seemed to be comfortable with the implications of health promotion, there are various insights that have led to the extensive focus on the concept. Health promotion has been considered as the process through which community stakeholders are engaged and empowered to boost their control and prevention of diseases. The general aim of this teaching plan was to address issues that are linked to sexual activities among teenagers such as STIs and teenage pregnancy due to lack of measures and protection. Through engaging in health programs within the community there will be much time devoted to solving the issues since adolescents will have knowledge on how to handle their sexuality and irresponsible sexual activities.
