Extrinsic motivation is bad for learning and goal-setting as it eliminates passion. Individuals relying on this form of motivation do not achieve the desired goals and objectives as rewards and punishments primarily guide them. Even though the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (2018) highlight that people are motivated to develop competence and solve challenges by rewards and punishments, intrinsic reasons are better suited to achieve their objectives. They offer powerful benefits compared to extrinsic aspects. Optimal individual and organizational productivity call for heavy reliance on intrinsic than extrinsic motivation.
Avoidance of extrinsic motivation is a key approach that enables individuals to expand their learning and achieve the developed goals and objectives. One of the rationales behind the elimination of extrinsic motivation is its absence of passion. For example, someone might focus on doing something due to the rewards that they achieve. Also, they might decide to do something because of the punishments associated with it. Avoidance of adverse outcomes motivates them to do something but fails to offer sustainability. They are likely to fulfill something for a short while to evade facing negative outcomes. Another reason for avoiding intrinsic is that it creates pressure to deliver results. People commit their time and efforts to deliver the expected milestones and objectives, which creates massive pressure. Instead of being directed by passion, where they plan their schedules appropriately, they hurriedly focus on completing a task. The human body and brain do not effectively work under pressure, which creates a significant challenge for them. Notably, extrinsic motivation leads to boredom and overall unhappiness. This is likely to affect individual and organizational performance, especially when rewards are not offered.
