Research Critique Guidelines – Part

Qualitative Studies

Background of Study

Over the years the healthcare workers have been at a high risk of violence in healthcare organizations. Various studies have focused on studying the high risks of violence of health workers and indicated that they suffer both physical and psychological stress. The two qualitative studies have indicated that the health workers have been at a high risk of violence from their colleagues and visitors. The article by Wallace, (2019) indicates the different types of violence and offers the causes of this violence. This has been effective in the nursing field since the nursing practitioners and other healthcare practitioners can be able to assess the causes of violence and offer effective solutions to the violence among the healthcare practitioner. The study focused on different hospitals that offered information about the different types of violence against healthcare workers.

The main objective of this article by Wallice (2019) was to expand on the violence that occurs in healthcare organizations and efforts to lower the acts of violence. The research question focused on what the various stakeholders can do to combat the violence of healthcare workers. On the other hand, the article by Longton (2015) on violence at the healthcare workplace against the psychiatrist’s aids aimed at highlighting data that can indicate the various violent actions on women as well as the laws that can be utilized to combat violence. The study highlighted various studies that were essential in assessing violence across the United States. The main aim of this article is to add research evidence on violence prevention and increasing an understanding of how different laws can be utilized in defending and protecting healthcare workers.

How the Two Articles Support the Violence Against Healthcare Workers

Considerably, the physical and verbal violence against the healthcare workers has reached high-risk levels which have undermined the role of the healthcare workers and impact crucially the health outcomes. The two qualitative studies have indicated the various types of violence and how they have influenced the roles of healthcare professionals. Ideally, the two qualitative studies have been effective in describing, evaluating, comparing, and understanding the different aspects of the PICOT question.

The PICOT question focuses on the establishment and enforcement of various laws that will protect the healthcare workers from violence as well as boost care delivery and healthcare outcomes through improved wellness of the staff. For instance, Wallace (2019) has focused on efforts to lower acts of violence. On the other hand, Longton (2015) focused on highlighting the data that indicates the percentage of different violent acts and how laws can be utilized in curbing violence. The article has also focused on the violence prevention act that was introduced in the United States. The article has furnished the research with relevant information that is linked to the violence prevention act and how the law can play an effective role in defending health workers.

Method of Study

Wallace (2019) relied on interviews to gather information on the growing rates of violence against workers in the healthcare field. The interviews are essential in collecting in-depth data concerning the thoughts, opinions, feelings, and experiences of people. Interviews allow the collection of data through conversing with the respondents and thus collecting elicit data about an issue. A small number of respondents can be effective in exploring a particular situation. One of the greatest possibilities of collecting data through interviews is that one can collect in-depth data related to the research question. Additionally, there is an opportunity for clarifying certain issues during the process if required. However, conducting interviews has its limitations due to bias and difficulties that are linked to the arrangement of appropriate time with individuals to conduct interviews.

Longton (2015) relied on survey research which is a process of carrying out research using surveys that enables the researchers to draw meaningful conclusions from the study. Qualitative survey research also offers in-depth information about the underlying motivations and reasoning. The occupational illness and injury data that was presented in the article by Longton (2015) was obtained from a survey that was carried out by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Considerably, the survey is an effective way of gather information from a large cohort. This means that that there are large amounts of data that can effectively be used to gain more knowledge on the issue at hand. Since data is obtained from a large population, the surveys have the potential of generalizability and tend to be a reliable technique of inquiry. However, the survey method has validity issues. This is because the survey questions are standardized which makes it challenging to ask anything rather than the general questions that will allow a range of people to understand. Therefore, the survey results may fail to be valid thus limiting the researcher from comprehensively examining the topic being studied.

Results of Study

Wallace (2019) has found out that four types of violence are linked to healthcare workers. Violence can occur from a non-associated person with the worker, the patient, current or former employee, and a perpetrator that has a personal connection with the worker. From the findings, it is clear that a stressful environment is the main cause of violence in healthcare settings. The findings also indicate that designing a workplace prevention plan is effective in reducing the incidents of workplace violence. Longton (2015) has shown that the type and nature of illness and injury linked to violent actions are somewhat dissimilar for the technicians and psychiatric aides. The greatest variation has been found in the nature category. The study indicates that psychiatric aides had injuries and illness rates approximately twice the rate of psychiatric technicians in 2011. The comparisons between 2009 and 2010 indicated that psychiatric aides had high rates of illnesses and injuries linked to violent acts as compared to psychiatric technicians.

With regards to the two qualitative studies, healthcare workers have been experiencing violent events that are greatly affecting the healthcare settings. The outcomes of violence against the healthcare workers can lead to life-threatening injuries, high turnover, low job satisfaction, and low work interest due to depression and post-traumatic disorders. Therefore, a legislative response and effective violence prevention plans can effectively reduce violence against healthcare workers.

Ethical Considerations

Considerably, one of the ethical considerations is exaggeration and deception of the objective and aims. Ideally, studies are required to avoid any exaggeration or deception about the objectives and aim to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. Therefore, any form of communication-related to the study should be conducted with transparency and honesty. The researcher must consider any type of harm that could be caused by deception or exaggeration. The second ethical consideration is the offering of misleading information. Any form of misleading information, as well as data representation of primary data results in a biased manner, should be avoided.

In both studies, the researchers avoided deception of the aims and objectives of their study. All information that was offered in the research was done transparently and honestly which allowed the researchers to maintain the value of their studies. For instance, during the survey and interview, the participants were offered full information regarding the study purpose. The articles offered relevant information and statistics linked to violence against healthcare workers and ways through which violence can be combatted with the healthcare settings. The primary data findings were relevant without any form of bias during study design and data collection.
