Social Determinants of Health Affecting the Family and their Impacts

The social determinates of health affecting Mr Arnold’s family include personal health practices and coping skills, which are the actions that individuals can take to improve self-care and prevent diseases (St George & Smith, 2017). These actions also help in making choices that enhance health. The family does not engage in regular exercises, so one of their son’sexperiences constipation often; regular exercise helps increase metabolic reactions and fastens bowel movements. Doing exercises can also help them increase their daughters sleeping patterns and can also apply in helping the general metabolic actions of the family.

The other social determinate of health affecting the family is social support networks; the level of support provided by both the family, friends and even the surrounding communities promotes better health (Rodriquez & Kaufman, 2019). This family is highly engaged in community activities which is vital in helping them deal with their problems and relieve stress. The family does not receive frequent health care services, thereby leading to increased exposure to health problems such as constipation and lack of sleep, as seen in one of the sons and their youngest daughter, respectively. Frequent visits to the clinic and regular checkups help prevent and minimize such illnesses.

Recommendations on Age-Appropriate Screening

Health screening is crucial for people of all ages, based on the age of each family member. The family doctor should do a screening at least on every family clinic visit, while some can be done independently. According to the United States Preventive Services Task Force, eyesight screening for all children aged one to five years should occur at least once between three to five years (Palmer &Ismond, 2019). Arnold’s sons are aged 1, 3 and 5, respectively, with one of the sons already having problems with his eyesight. The family should do a test to determine the presence of amblyopia and its risk factors. However, USPSTF mentions that the available evidence is not enough to evaluate the stability of profits and the dangers of eyesight screening for children.

According to the strength of recommendation taxonomy (SORT), constipation in children is often diagnosed at ages 1 to 6 through physical examination and medical history. Polyethylene glycol-based solutions are consistent, and good-quality patient-oriented evidence is highly recommended since patients can use it effectively; it is easy to use. It is well endured in children having constipation (Smith & Prado, 2017). Families should consider doing a checkup for cholesterol every year for members who fall between the ages of 18-39. It is checked after every five years if average and annually if one shows any risk factors. In this case, Mrs. Arnold should undertake this special screening for cholesterol levels. At the age of 65, screening for pneumonia should be completed annually and take a pneumonia vaccine every five years for certain circumstances. This should be done by Mr Arnold, who falls within this age bracket.

Health Model for a Plan of Action (ecological model)

The ecological model is used to highlight how people interact with their physical and social environments, and it recognizes a large number of influences on health behaviour. It is also an essential tool for outlining the factors affecting health and well-being (Kesslar & Thume, 2018). This model is the best since it helps provide outlooks of the issues that affect some particular health behaviours. These models’ guidelines can be used to explain approaches to other theories and models.

Action Plan

Higher levels/standards of education should be improved to increase family stability, the minimum wages of families should be increased to help families be stable, strengthening a healthy environment and enhancing safety in the community for families to perform better, expanding medical care services to provide easier access to medical services equally amongst families and introducing policies that support leaves for families that such as the ones that have newborn or have children with chronic needs.

Steps for Family-Centered Health Promotion using the Ecological Model

The first step for family-centred health promotion is holding an open communication with family members by sharing information and giving words of encouragement to the patients, secondly recognizing and understanding the importance of family by supporting the family’s values and beliefs, thirdly encouraging family and organizational collaboration, which involves patient engagement and encouraging the family to play a part in the treatment process. Fourth is enabling the family members to support the treatment process and promote cultural literacy, which involves respect for cultural differences and learning to associate with other cultures and beliefs(Weiller& Ferraz, 2018).

Strategies for Communication

Proper communication between families and health care providers enhances the success of a family-centred approach to medical assistance. Some of the major strategies used to improve effective communication include encouraging open discussions, giving everyone an equal opportunity to air their views, not judging the ideas laid by the person to whom you are communicating, and using a language understandable to all.
