Quantitative research aims to expound on the correlational and causal relationship between two or more variables while attempting to test a hypothesis. On the other hand, qualitative research uses observation and interviews as a means to understand a particular phenomenon. As in many other research fields, in nursing both forms of research can be used together to improve reliability and validity. The difference however creates both advantages and disadvantages in both and must be understood prior to conducting research. One such example is that qualitative research is very instrumental when conducting a small purpose oriented research while quantitative research is more appropriate for random, and large samples (Rutberg 2018). Secondly, qualitative research is more appropriate when the phenomenon being tested is well known but it would require a quantitative type of research where the causal relationship is unknown or when the requirement is to describe a new phenomenon (Rahman 2020). These examples indicate that depending on the research type, or research stage, either method is suitable or unsuitable meaning to achieve perfect results a combination of both is the best alternative.

By including research based practice, nurses have an opportunity to make well founded research with different variables in consideration. Nurses can also stay up to date on new medical protocols in patient care and include their patients in the foundations of their care plans. The general purpose of research is to improve the metrics of performance and by using evidence-based practice, nurses actively engage in providing the best and most effective care available and therefore more suited to obtain the best outcome (Hashish 2020).
