Presentation for a Community Health Center

Over the years, the prevalence of overweight and obesity among adults of 18 years and above has increased substantially. By 2016, reports by the World Health Organization (WHO), (2021) indicate that 1.9 billion adults were overweight or obese. The logic of taking initiatives in preventing this condition is, therefore, self-evident. First, understanding overweight and obesity are fundamental in establishing sustainable measures. Overweight and obesity is a condition triggered by lack of physical activity and eating excess calories, mostly from fatty and sugary foods (WHO, 2021). Technological advance has reduced the amount of physical activity, particularly among adults, due to efficient means of transport and increased sedentary lifestyle.

Although making adjustments may prove difficult for some people, it is recommended to follow a gradual procedure. In this case, the overall goal should be reducing the number of calories consumed per day. Most importantly, considering the level of overweight and obesity can help in creating an effective weight loss plan. For instance, people with extreme levels of obesity have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 and above (Highland Hospital, 2021). For such individuals, the most appropriate measure is to replace unhealthy habits with healthy ones. Thus, one should include vegetables, fruits, proteins, and lower amounts of carbohydrates in their diet. However, it is essential to consume more calories from healthy foods during the first stages to allow the body to adapt to new changes.

On the other hand, healthy people should prevent the onset of overweight and obesity by leading healthy lifestyles. A perfect example of sustainable exercises may include brisk walking to work instead of taking a bus, and running for a few miles while adjusting based on progress. People should also focus on lowering their stress levels, as it may tempt them to increase their calorie intake.
