Meet your class

Meet Your Classmates and Earn Course Points, Too!

Once again, let me welcome you to Virtual College’s EVR 1001 – Introduction to Environmental Science.

Before you begin to participate in our first Forum, I want you to read “How to Rock A Discussion Forum” (Course Menu → COURSE INFORMATION → Start Here! → How To Do Your Best In A Virtual College Course) so that you can start participating in the course discussions in meaningful and effective ways (thus earning the most possible points, too, right!). I trust that you’ll develop good Discussion Forum habits that will carry throughout the course.

This discussion board is worth 10 points and goes toward your “participation” grade for the course.

A. Now it’s time for us to introduce ourselves within the context of this course. So, please tell your classmates and me:

your name and where you are from (“from” is however you define it). Provide a picture if you wish, this helps us associate a face with a name in this remote environment. This is worth 1 point.
the origin of your name. That is, were you named after someone? something? somewhere? Do you see any environmental connection(s) to your name? If yes, how? This is worth 2.5 points.
which of the two worldviews described in the text (discussed within Chap 2) is your worldview closest to and why? This is worth 2.5 points.
B. After you have posted, you must respond to at least two of your classmates right there on the discussion thread. This is worth 2 + 2 = 4 points.

In your response posting, you must include
a substantial, significant reply to at least two classmates; note, a response includes a significant statement/commentary/additional example on the classmates’ post that adds something significant to the conversation…not just “good job” or “I like your post.” (these are worth 2 point each).
Your initial posting is worth up to 6 points and your response posting is worth up to 4 points (10 points total). Grammar and mechanics count so please proofread your work.

Name: Wilna
Origin of name unknown and not named after anyone.

ANSWER

Introduction

Hello professor and my classmates. My name is Wilna, and I am excited to be starting this class. I hope to have interesting discussions about the environment and the world we live in today and the impact of our activities on the environment. Unfortunately, I do not know the origin of the name, and I am not named after anyone. The only connection my name has to the environment is my existence and the desire to make it a better place for future generations. The fact that I do not know how my name is connected to the environment and its origin makes me want to start a trend for other people with a similar name. If I make significant contributions to the environment, then the name Wilna will be associated with a person who made the world a better place. That is a dream I hope to achieve through the lessons I will learn in this class.

Now that we have met and you already know about my dreams and what I hope to achieve at the end of the course, I think I can also share my worldview. My worldview is closest to understanding how the environment works and our place in it. As I have stated above, I want my name to be associated with making a difference in the environment. Therefore, these changes can only be made if I understand the environment, how it works, and my role. There are many climatic and environmental changes that keep taking place as a result of human activity. The industrial revolution and human activities have harmed the environment. The more people are born into our world, the more pressure it receives. I, therefore, yearn to understand what could be done to improve the situation and make the world a better and conducive place for both animal and plant life.
