Indonesia

Introduction

My topic is on Indonesia, the general purpose is to inform, while the specific purpose is that after listening to my speech, my audience will learn more about Indonesia and its culture.

Imagine being on a trip to one of the best areas to be in the world, Bali, Indonesia, and witnessing the vivid and rich culture it flows with their scenery. I will be telling you about Indonesia and its diverse culture and customs. I came to know of Indonesia after watching many cultural videos that focused on Asian culture. Since I am Asian, I tried to learn more about cultures other than my own, and in the process, I stumbled upon Indonesia and its colorful culture. I intend to focus on the overview of Indonesia’s cultural aspects, then I’ll tell you about their unique communication behaviors. Lastly, I’ll tell you about a current event going on in the area.

  1. Indonesia’s culture has several cultural factors that make it known today around the world.
  2. A. According to the 2020 CultureGrams Online World Edition’s entry on Indonesia, in the section “Lifestyle and Customs & Courtesies,”“Sendratari” is a musical drama that carries many Hindu influences by acting out old Hindu epics. Additionally, the “Kecak” dance is a performance dance that depicts the old Hindu epic called “Ramayana,” a tale of a Prince named Rama saving his wife, Sita, from danger (CultureGrams, 2020).
  3. Indonesians have three meal times with snacks in between. The meals consist of rice or noodles accompanied by vegetables and meat, usually beef or chicken. I.The high population of Muslims in the country influences the meat they take, hence the beef and chicken (CultureGrams, 2020).
  4. The Indonesians have a unique way in which they communicate with each other.
  5. According to Geert Hofstede’s and Michael Minkov’s research on the page “What about Indonesia?” last updated in 2010, Indonesia is 14% of the Individualistic aspect, while the U.S with 91%. This aspect makes Indonesia have a collectivistic society, which contrasts from the U. S’s individualistic society. I.In the collective aspect of Indonesia, there is a common practice where children take care of their parents in their retirement after their parents raised them well (Hofstede & Minkov 2010).
  6. When it comes to interacting under challenging situations, 48% of uncertain avoidance is present in the country, which is two percent higher in the U.S.

To summarize the work culture in Indonesia, “Asal Bapak Senang,” which translates to keep the boss happy, is a saying to describe that if people keep their boss happy, their job is secured, since the culture prioritizes harmony in the group first (Hofstede & Minkov, 2010).

  1. Having discussed the Indonesian culture and communicative behavior, I will discuss a current event in the country. The country’s most recent law, “the Omnibus bill,” regarding jobs has led to citizens’ protests.
  2. According toAccording to the article “Protests Spread Across Indonesia Over Jobs Law,” by Dera Menra Sijabat and Richard C. Paddock in the October 8th, 2020 edition of the New York Times, the new Omnibus Bill restricts many of the worker’s protection rights, causing many to protest against the ruling. I. In response to the protests, the president claims that the law is intended to help businesspeople get their permits quickly because of the expenses of land and workers (Sijabat and Paddock 2020). II. Although, most people against the law state that rather than helping the workers, it restricts their pay, vacation. Further, the bill causes job insecurity while benefiting the wealthy more.
  3. In addition to the law affecting worker’s policies, the new Omnibus Bill also affects the environmental practices from being carried out in the country (Sijabat & Paddock, 2020). Environmentalists allude that the law will cause a delay in projects that are focused on preserving the environment, such as cut-off time meant to reduce deforestation and carbon emissions.

Conclusively, this article provides a clear summary of Indonesia from their cultural overview to their unique communicative behaviors, and finally, a current event taking place in the country. Indonesia is a country that has a distinct culture with its practices and customs, aspects that make the country stand for, their strength and purity.
