Washington to Bar U.S Investors from 59 Chinese Companies

The Biden administration has banned American investors from investing in various surveillance and defense technology companies to prevent the U.S capital from being utilized by China in undermining national security (RealClearPolitics, 2021). The executive order to avoid investments in 59 Chinese companies focus on preventing the U.S from funding the Chinese military indirectly. The directive prohibits the American from direct investments in both equity and debt securities and investing in funds that involve Chinese securities in their portfolios.

Trade wars which were the instrument of foreign policy and trade, have returned into mainstream politics in the U.S administration. The trade war and trade disputes have been considered as the side effects of protectionism. Protectionism entails the government policies and actions that limit international trade. The American government has deepened on various protectionist measures which are against different trading partners. For instance, a country may undertake protectionism to balance the trade deficits. Biden believes that the investors are funding the Chinese military by investing in these companies, which may be damaging to the businesses and consumers in the U.S. the US-China trade has a significant impact on the domestic politics of both countries.

As the trade dispute between the two largest economies escalates, tariffs and sanctions have constantly changed. The tensions between the two countries are multilayered and far-reaching, covering military aspects, trade, financial markets, and technology. The U.S has accused China of its unfair trading approaches, while China, on the other hand, says that the U.S is attempting to curb its rise to global economic power. Uncertainties in trade wars and disputes have greatly impacted businesses, investments, and the economy. The trade wars will reduce U.S investment, thus affecting investment growth. The impact of defensive spending due to trade wars is more negative to the growth of the global economy.
