The IOM Future of Nursing Recommendations for achieving higher levels of education.
IOM Future of Nursing recommends that nurses need to practice the complete scope of their training and education (Ulrich, 2015). Nurses are expected to attain advanced levels of training and education through a developed education scheme that facilitates continuous academic progression. The IOM report views nursing education as a stand for continued learning, including a continuous transition to higher learning and degree programs (Ulrich, 2015). I would like to pursue a Bachelor of Nursing Degree and a Master of Science in nursing, which will allow me as a Registered Nurse to advance in my career. The two programs will enable me to develop my skills and knowledge through intense theoretical and practical classes.
I would like to become an advanced practice nurse, which requires one to hold at least a Master’s degree in addition to the license and nursing education required for all registered nurses. The bachelor’s degree and master’s degree allow one to master more than the basic care skills and knowledge and offer a stronger foundation that helps move into advanced nursing roles. I will get the BSN degree by 2023 since it takes about three years. I will then pursue my Master of Science in Nursing by 2025 since the master’s program will take about two years.
Increasing Level of Education.
Increasing the level of education will influence competitiveness in the job market since one has advanced and additional techniques that broaden competency in healthcare. High levels of education allow one to qualify in different nursing roles that cannot be accessed by nurses limited to the registered nurse field. For instance, the BSN and MSN degrees will facilitate better patient care and health outcome. Earning a master’s degree in nursing will enable me to be identified as a more qualified nurse for higher-level positions such as Nurse Administrator or Chief Nursing Officer within the nursing field. Without higher levels of education, my chances to develop my career beyond my present position are limited.
Continuing Nursing Education
Continuous education maintains up-to-date skills and knowledge, which are essential in maintaining positive attitudes, values, thinking ability, and competency. Continuing nursing education has enabled the nurses to carry out their responsibilities in a way that is constant with ethical responsibilities and quality nursing care (Dickerson and Bernard, 2018). For instance, continuing education can boost clinical reasoning and improve attitudes towards accurate nursing diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, continuing nursing education ensures that nurses are up to date with the latest treatment and care advances. It also offers an opportunity to explore areas of nursing such as home health, pain management, and case management to meet the needs of the patients through accurate and logical thinking skills.
Continuing nursing education should be mandatory.
Continuing nursing education has to be compulsory since it contributes to the advancement of the nursing profession in terms of responsibility, accountability, and decision-making. This allows nurses to handle diverse patients’ demands, act as leaders, and advance science that improves the delivery of safe and quality patient care (Tachtsoglou et al., 2019). Ideally, nurses do not practice by similar standards they did while they began their career, so they need to focus on continuous learning to stay informed of changes in the nursing practice. Lifelong learning offers nurses critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed to resolve problems that they may experiences as they advance in their careers (Gorski et al., 2015). They also remain up to date with policies, new techniques, and procedures that allow them to influence healthcare and improve health outcomes.
