ANSWER
Assignment Title; Humanistic Model of Personality Expression
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a theory that comprises of five human needs which is depicted in a pyramid according to its urgency. The needs at the bottom of the pyramid should rather be satisfied before the needs at the top. These needs from top to bottom are; self-actualization, esteem needs, belongingness and love needs, safety needs and physiological needs. The first four needs from the bottom are also known as deficiency needs since the longer the duration an individual is denied, the stronger the motivation to fulfill it .e.g. when someone has not eaten for days, the urgency of eating increases. Self-accusation is also known as growth needs since the motivation increases as the needs are being fulfilled. Growth needs arise from the desire to grow as an individual. Being able to reach self-actualization without achieving the other needs is not possible. Maslow (1943, 1954) stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs and that some needs take precedence over others.
Self-actualization is the desire to become the best one can be while seeking personal growth and realizing one’s personal capability and self- fulfillment. A desire “to become everything one is capable of becoming” (Maslow, 1987, p. 64). Self-actualization may lead people into different directions since each individual has different tastes and is unique. Examples include; sports, music, art or even in class. The specific form that these needs will take will of course vary greatly from person to person. In one individual it may take the form of the desire to be an ideal mother, in another it may be expressed athletically, and in still another it may be expressed in painting pictures or in inventions’ (Maslow, 1943, p. 382–383).
Nelson Mandela was a South African politician who fought against apartheid regime and spent 20 years in prison for that. He was later released in 1990 and by 1996 he was elected the first leader of the Republic of South Africa. Mandela was globally admired for his capability to bring together a nation that was once divided and won a Nobel Peace Prize for his good work. Nelson Mandela was a well-educated man who studied law at the University College of Fort Hare and also the University of Witwatersrand and completed in 1942. In 1943 he decided to join the struggle against apartheid since he was now a well-qualified lawyer. In 1956, Nelson Mandela alongside some ANC members were arrested and charged for treason but were acquitted in 1961 after lengthy court cases.
In 1963, he was again arrested and put on trial for treason and this time he was sentenced for life imprisonment since he tried to overthrow the government. He made friends with other politicians who were also jailed and that was a “learning” experience for him. This made him become famous globally since he stayed fighting for South Africa’s right and strived for democracy. “We believe that South Africa belongs to all the people who live in it, and not to one group, be it black or white. We did not want an interracial war, and tried to avoid it to the last minute”(Nelson Mandela, Supreme court of South Africa, Pretoria, April 20, 1964).
Nelson Mandela was later released on February 11,1990 which symbolized the end of apartheid regime. “The time for the healing of the wounds has come. The moment to bridge the chasms that divide us has come. The time to build is upon us.”– Nelson Mandela. In April 1994, South Africa had its first ever democratic elections. “If there are dreams about a beautiful South Africa, there are also roads that lead to their goal. Two of these roads could be named goodness and forgiveness.”– Nelson Mandela
In 1999, Mandela retired as the president and was succeeded by Thabo Mbeki. Due to ill conditions that he has, Mandela passed on year later alongside his family in 2013. In 2002, he expressed concern at American actions, he said; “I really wanted to retire and rest and spend more time with my children, my grandchildren and of course with my wife. But the problems are such that for anybody with a conscience who can use whatever influence he may have to try to bring about peace, it’s difficult to say no.” (10 September 2002)
Nelson Mandela was a self-actualized person since he possessed a democratic world view and self-acceptance. He also had a philosophical sense of humor since he has studied law and when he was sentenced to prison, he did a lot of writing. Rather than being fearful, Nelson Mandela unfolded things as they were and logically. He was also very independent and did not wait or need anyone’s opinion for contentment and this made him very unique. At his memorial, Barack Obama said; We will not likely see the likes of Nelson Mandela ever again, so it falls to us, as best we can, to carry forward the example that he set. He no longer belongs to us; he belongs to the ages.”
