The Negative Effects of Technology
The world has technologically advanced over the last few decades. One can conclude that the new technological advancements have simplified communication and that families worldwide can connect over their phones, laptops, and iPads. Technology has, however, brought with it some adverse effects such as poor communication skills. Technology is in many forms. The most common use of technology is the use of social media. Social media is available to many people globally. The irony is that social media is meant to bring people together, but most people who use it a lot claim to be socially isolated. In the world, today people no longer communicate because they are mostly glued to their phones. The attachment to technology also leaves people feeling isolated because they lack human contact due to the large amounts of time spent on gadgets. Technology is harmful, especially to relationships.
Technology does not only affect relationships. It also has harmful effects on the health of a person. According to Gill (2019), technology causes sleep problems. Technology interferes with sleep in several ways. According to a study conducted in 2015, exposure to the blue light that devises emit can suppress melatonin and interrupt the circadian clock. This makes it harder to sleep, which leads to sleepless nights and destructed days. Many people carry their gadgets to their bedrooms and spend hours on them before finally going to sleep. This is destructive because the person is likely to be distracted the whole day and will not pay attention to the activities during the day.
Internet use has also been linked with emotional problems. The Internet enables one to be connected to the outside world, but it can lead to issues such as anxiety and depression. Most people on social media are leading false lifestyles. This is most detrimental to teenagers as they feel pressured to fit in with their peers, and when they do not, they feel left out and like failures. Social media also sets a certain standard of life which is defined as being successful. When a person spends so much of their time on Instagram and other social media platforms, there is a high possibility of them feeling inadequate and like they are failures. Technology affects children and adults alike (Gill, 2019). Spending too much time on video games, television, and other gadgets also leads to lifestyle health problems such as obesity. Children who spend so much time on their gadgets have a higher chance of being obese than those who take time to be physically Active away from their gadgets.
One might object and say that technology does not have any harmful effects because it has brought medical technology that helps the patients and has made scientific research easier. It is also easy to overlook the harmful effects of technology because people feel better connected with technology than that without it. Technology has indeed made things easier, but in making things easier, it has made many people lazy, and many are not capable of leading their lives without their gadgets (Alghamdi, 2016). The adverse effects of technology are almost the same as the positive effects. It has enabled doctors to connect virtually with their patients and made it easy to retrieve patient files, but it has also taken away the chance for doctors to connect with their patients. The virtual appointments have made patients mere numbers or usernames. Sometimes a doctor needs to connect physically with the patient to understand their problem.
Technology has also led to people skipping their physical activity programs to catch up on the latest trends and topics (Gill, 2019). The young generation no longer knows how to spend time or create a conversation because they spend too much time on their gadgets. People meet on their phones start relationships, and when they meet in person, they have nothing to say to each other because they know nothing beyond their social media pages, video games, and movies. Technology is a good thing, but it should also be regulated to ensure that people can still connect with fellow human beings without depending on technology to help them.
Technology is one of the best things that happened to the modern world. It can, however, be harmful and should be regulated. Interpersonal relationships are dying because people no longer discuss life problems over coffee or spend their weekends hiking because they are too busy updating their status and catching up on the latest video games. Human connection is an essential part of human life that has been neglected due to technological advancements, but the problem can be controlled as soon as people realize that there is a problem. The lack of social skills by the upcoming generation can be regulated by limiting the screen time and creating more time for in-person activities such as soccer weekends and family picnic weekends. These activities should include a strict policy where screens will not be involved. In doing so, people will learn social skills and bond with other humans, reducing social isolation and improving relationships.
