Applying the Four Functions of Management

The four functions of management include organizing, planning, controlling and leading. Understanding the nature of these elements is integral in the development of the organization. The four functions arrange the production factors, organizes and assembles resources, and integrates resources in a manner that will allow the achievement of goals (Lloyd and Aho, 2020). This paper will focus on how the four functions of management will help in achieving performance goals. The four functions of management will work together in the development, execution and realization of organizational goals.

Planning will allow the establishment of goals as well as develop the course of action for achievement. Planning makes strategic decisions that will direct the organization. When planning, I will take a depth analysis of the current affairs and consider the mission and vision of the organization to meet the organizational objectives with the available resources. Organizing will establish internal structures and processes to understand which teams or employees are best for certain tasks, thus making sure that everyone and everything is organized within the daily operations (Lloyd and Aho, 2020). Ideally, organizing is not just about delegating tasks but also ensuring employees have what they require to achieve their tasks.

Leading will focus on managing people rather than tasks. This consists of motivating employees and impacting their behaviours to meet their organizational objectives. Leading will bring a sense of leadership and direction to communicate new processes. Leading will facilitate small personal interactions through modelling encouraging, supportive and motivational qualities (Sasidhar and Singh, 2020). To ensure that all the functions and objectives focus on the organization’s success, controlling will consistently monitor the performance of employees with the organization. This will ensure that the ultimate goals of the organization are met and necessary changes made. For instance, evaluating the quality of work, giving feedback and suggestions for improvement will lead to a high performing organization.

In summation, the four functions of management will aim at planning and implementing the plans to attain the goals and organize the plans while directing the workforce on their roles and controlling the plan. The four management functions are linked to each other to enable the organization to efficiently meet its goals.
