Part 4: Cross-Functional Application

Leading a team of diverse requires different skills than leading a team of individuals with similar backgrounds (Armstrong, 2020). As a leader I must be able to understand and manage the different needs of each team member in order to create a cohesive team. Communication skills are essential for leading a team of diverse individuals (Vardarlıer, 2016). I have to listen to team members and understand their needs. As a leader I must also be able to effectively communicate the team’s goals and objectives to all members. Understanding how to communicate with people from different cultures is essential in managing a diverse team. This includes being aware of the cultural norms and expectations, as well as using language that is appropriate for the audience. I also have to adapt to their communication style to fit the needs of the team. Another important skill is awareness of people’s differences. As a leader I must also be aware that different team members may have different goals for how they want to work with the team. For example, some members may prefer a more collaborative approach, while others may be more comfortable with a more hierarchical structure. Therefore, I need to be aware of different perceptions and attitudes of the members in order to work with them collaboratively.

Team building exercises can help to break down barriers and help team members to get to know each other better. Activities can be as simple as taking a walk together or playing a game, or they can be more elaborate and structured. Whatever the case, team building exercises can help to promote collaboration and a sense of community within a team. Fostering feedback practices is another way to encourage collaboration in a team. Feedback allows team members to provide input on their work and how it can be improved (Lendzion, 2015). It also allows team members to give and receive feedback in a respectful way. Collaborative feedback practices can help team members feel more connected to their work and the team as a whole.
