First Semester Performance Task
Your Assignment: In a literary work, authors often explore more than one theme to produce a complex account. Identify the themes or central ideas of The Sound of Waves.
200 points
Possible Examples: An example of this particular prompt may be identifying central ideas like friendship and euthanasia in Of Mice and Men then connecting the two to determine that Steinbeck is suggesting we are responsible for each other. In 1984, one theme is that language is a tool of manipulation and another is that freedom is often at odds with security. These examples would address how analyzing these themes together, rather than in isolation, leads to a more complex understanding of the novel.

Sound of Waves
The novel Sound of Waves’ author is Yukio Mishima. The novel Sound of Waves has outlined several themes that involve human nature and life. It has themes that have moral lessons. Some of the themes that circulate the novel are; lessons from nature, devotion, love, and coming of age. All these themes that have been covered in this book have moral lessons that can be used to guide human beings to differentiate between right and wrong. The lessons learned from these themes also help humans to live responsibly. This paper will discuss the main theme in the novel Sound of Waves and the impact on human life.
Yukio Mishima has explained the theme of lessons learned from nature in a way that sounds real to the reader. Some lessons cannot be taught in the class but require a person to learn oneself (Nakatani & Saiichiro 321). Other lessons are just taught by the nature automatically. Some lessons one has to learn by observing what others do and what have been the effects after their actions. Are the effects of their actions positive or negative? This question should guide everyone who tries to learn new things from others. In the novel Sound of Waves, Yukio Mishima uses Hatsue to explain this theme. Hatsue is a beautiful young lady who does pearl driving (Nakatani & Saiichiro 321). She is the most beautiful girl in the whole of Uta-jima. She belongs to the most powerful man on this island. Hatsue does pearl diving and this is what allows her to learn lessons such as bravery and persistence. She has to be brave so that she can dive into the waters to get the pearls that will benefit her. This has grown her bravery. She also has to be persistent because she does not get the pearls every day. This theme explains how a human can learn some lessons from nature.
The novel Sound of Waves also explains the theme of love. Love has explored the whole plot of the novel (Boman 112). One of the paintings in the novel that shows the theme of love is the story about Hatsue. Hatsue is magnetically drawn to Shinji. They both love each other and they also like staying and working together. They even traverse the wells of love and sex most of the time. They keep on flirting now and then. Love is something that a human cannot live with (Boman 106). Every human has what they are usually attracted to and they feel that they always want to stay close to someone or something that they love. This theme of love in the Sound of Waves has taught many people how they should love each other. It has shown what love partners expect from each other so that they can be satisfied in this love (Boman 97).
The theme of devotion has also traversed in the novel Sound of Waves. Shinji and Hatsue are devoted to each other because of their love for each other. They are capable of settling the gossip and jealousy that tends to tamper their relationship (Boman 96). Love partners should be devoted to each other so that they can understand what each wants and what they don’t want in their relationship. This theme of devotion that has been explained in this novel Sound of Waves can be a good guide to people who are in love. They should always respect each other opinions and be open to each other (Boman 101).
In conclusion, in the novel Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima, loving devotion, and lessons from nature have come out very clearly. These themes can be understood clearly by the reader. These themes have a great impact on the human because they guide them to do what is right.
