Across Culture Competence

Across culture competence is an integral part of the success of an organization, as it gives the basic understanding of different cultures and how to associate with them. It is also an important part of leadership, as the leader is expected to work with people from diverse backgrounds and incorporate their skills to work in unison (Chiu & Shi, 2018). Some of the important attributes of cultural competence include cultural knowledge, cultural awareness, cultural skills, dynamicity, cultural proficiency, and cultural sensitivity (Li, 2020). Some of these cultural competence attributes have been highlighted in the case study analyzing Nissan-Renault CEO, Carlos Ghosn. For instance, Ghosn notes that an important attribute of cultural competence is having a sense of empathy and respect. Respect is essential when operating in a new country, and one needs to develop empathy regarding the new culture and develop a sense of understanding (Slocumv& Hellriegel, 2009). The success of the company depends on the prevailing culture and people. Hence, understanding, appreciating, respecting, and loving their culture helps the business run smoothly.

Ghosn also acknowledges that a leader should also possess the essence of recognizing cultural diversity based on gender, age, and diverse cultures (Slocumv& Hellriegel, 2009). This is clearly illustrated through his transcultural leadership skill of emphasizing the need of hiring more women in the senior ranks within Nissan. When he was first employed as the CRO, the company only had 1% women working in the senior ranks. However, through his leadership, the number has grown to 5%, and Ghosn continues to aim for 10% more women in this workforce. In addition, Ghosn also asserts that bringing people from different cultures together helps promote innovation (Slocumv& Hellriegel, 2009).
