Targeting Audiences in Communication

Question 2

Understanding the audience is essential in communication. It lays the foundation of how messages can be framed and what feedback the sender of the message can receive. However, there are instances, especially in the era of social media, that posted messages can be interpreted incorrectly. In some circumstances, the message may be misleading, forcing the sender of the message to delete the information. Social media is widely used, with millions of users and subscribers loyally following celebrities. Thus, they are held accountable for their words and actions on social media. A particular incidence was the post uploaded by Oleksandr Zinchenko concerning the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces. Being a native of Ukraine, Zinchenko posted alongside a picture of President Vladimir Putin, ‘I hope you die the most painful suffering death, monster!’(O’Brien, 2022). However, due to his celebrity status, he was later forced to delete the post due to many teenagers and children looking up to him could gain access to the obscene information.

Question 4

I agree with the critics that complain that texting and instant messaging lead to text-speak and poor writing. With modern technology, adults and children alike can send instant messages, which are often in short form. Phrases like ‘laugh out loud’ have been abbreviated to ‘lol,’ which is a quicker way of relaying the information. However, such abbreviations and acronyms affect the writing skills of these users (Manc, 2020). According to numerous research, children who spend more time texting have poor writing and verbal communication skills. Due to technology enabling ‘suggestion texts’ where the user types in the first letters of the word and the device completes it, students have difficulty pronouncing the whole word by themselves. The use of abbreviations contributes to ‘literacy laziness,’ with many students preferring to text rather than write long essays.
