Unit 10 Assignment: Performance Measurement in Supply Chain Networks
***Please use Unit 10 grading rubric attached***
MT433-6: Analyze the performance of the supply chain network.
Effective performance management of the supply chain is critical in being successful. Companies cannot know if their supply chain efforts are improving their performance without effective measures. Well selected performance measures can also be key in shaping a company’s efforts.
For this assignment, apply the following analysis to either your organization (if it fits), or to an organization whose supply chain network you can research.
First, explain the importance of properly measuring the performance of a supply chain network for this organization. Describe what they do, why supply chain management is important for them, and what elements they would want to measure and improve.
Then, conduct research to suggest three metrics that are frequently identified as useful for analyzing a global supply chain’s performance. There should be both financial and non-financial metrics in your choices. Explain why you have selected these and how they can help one analyze a balanced picture of the supply chain for this organization.
Respond using the critical elements below:
Compose your original response in Standard English, paying special attention to grammar, style, and mechanics.
Respond to the questions in a thorough manner, following the prescribed format and citing your sources using the current APA guidelines.
Ensure that your viewpoint and purpose are clearly stated.
Demonstrate logical and appropriate transitions from one idea to another.
Your paper should be highly organized, logical, and focused.
ANSWER
Performance Measurement in Supply Chain Networks
Introduction
Performance measurement in supply chain networks entails measuring the efficiency of the supply chain to meet the end client requirements such as order fulfillment, on-time delivery and product availability (Anand and Grover, 2015). It also allows the organization to examine whether the supply chain has degraded or improved. These measures focus on qualitative and quantitative benchmarks that motivate the management to make realistic decisions that will benefit the corporation. Therefore, this paper will focus on the performance of Walmart’s supply chain network.
The Importance of Properly Measuring the Performance of a Supply Chain Network
Walmart is among the well-known global retail corporations with competitive advantages which enables the company to dominate the retail industry and grow successfully. The company operates various discounting warehouses and retailing stores with more than 11,000 stores in about 27 countries. The company has expanded globally in its operations and revenue with more than 2.2 million employees. Walmart has relied on a supply chain strategy that has offered several competitive gains such as low inventory costs, low product costs, store variety and reasonable pricing.
Performance measurement is vital to Walmart’s supply chain management for several reasons. First, it can help identify areas where the supply chain is not performing up to par. This information is valuable for decision-makers as it can help them allocate resources more effectively and make improvements where necessary. Additionally, performance measurement can help benchmark the supply chain against its competitors, which can be helpful for competitive analysis (Avelar-Sosa, García-Alcaraz and Maldonado-Macías, 2019). Finally, analyzing performance data over time can reveal supply chain trends and allow for predictions about future needs and challenges
Measuring the supply chain performance has enabled the company to manage its inventory and product costs, boost competitive pricing and increase store variety and selection (Berthold, 2019). For instance, they have controlled their inventory digitally, which allows them to keep their data flowing through their supply chain, which ensures that there is always enough inventory. Walmart has relied on supply chain metrics to manage their business operations since they gain essential information necessary for decision-making, especially in distribution and inventory.
Walmart has various supply chain key performance indicators (KPIs) used to evaluate the performance and efficiency of the supply chain. The KPIs are used to monitor the supply chain’s success. For instance, on–time-full-delivery, perfect order rate has been one of the KPIs for efficiency in Walmart’s supply chain. These supply chain key performance indicators are essential for supply chain management. Through supply chain management, Walmart has been able to solve the issues of large inventory and lower its capital expenses.
Creating an efficient supply chain is vital for Walmart. Therefore, some elements need to be measured and improved to boost the performance of the supply chain. On-time delivery, customer satisfaction and order cycle time are elements that Walmart would want to measure and improve. On-time delivery measures the customer’s promised delivery date with the customer order lines (Hugos, 2018). Customer satisfaction measures high responsiveness and low pricing, directly linked to the supply chain performance. Order cycle time shows the average duration taken to ship an order from when the customer placed the order, thus tracking the order fulfilment process and supply chain efficiency.
Useful Metrics for Analyzing Global Supply Chain Performance
Several metrics can utilized to examine the performance of a supply chain network. The three significant metrics used by Walmart include inventory turn, customer satisfaction and fill rate. Customer satisfaction is often considered one of the most important, as it speaks to the capability of the supply chain to meet consumer needs. Customer satisfaction measures how well the supply chain is meeting customer needs and expectations (Hugos, 2018). Measuring consumer satisfaction is vital in identifying weak points within the supply chain and ways to address them.
Fill rate is another key metric, as it reflects the percentage of orders that are filled completely and on time. Fill rate measures how often orders are filled completely and on time. The metric indicates how efficient the supply chain operates to meet customer orders. Inventory turns measure how quickly inventory moves through the supply chain, and transportation costs can give insights into the efficiency of the supply chain. Inventory turns measure how quickly inventory moves through the supply chain (Hugos, 2018). It also indicates how well the management controls the inventor costs and turns inventory into sales, thus framing Walmart’s financial footsteps.
Conclusion
Performance measurement is a critical tool for supply chain management, as it provides insights into how the supply chain is performing and helps identify areas needing improvement. There are several different performance measures that can be used in supply chain networks, but some of the most important ones include customer satisfaction, inventory turns, and other supply chain costs. When used correctly, performance measurement can be a valuable tool for the supply chain management. It can help to identify areas needing improvement, benchmark against other organizations, and predict future trends in the supply chain network. Organizations should select the performance measures that are most relevant to their specific needs and objectives. However, it is important to remember that no single metric can provide a complete picture of supply chain performance. Instead, a combination of measures should be used to get a broad view of the supply chain’s strengths and weaknesses.
